Efforts to get an Orchard Mesa baseball team to Denver are underway.
The team has only lost one game all season, but faulty paperwork is keeping them from the state championship.
"We worked so hard and all of that was pretty much for nothing now," team captain, Kyle Slagle, said.
Orchard Mesa Little League's senior all-star team is spending the summer together.
"We?re out here practicing every night for two hours," Slagle said.
They?re putting in all that time for one goal.
"To go to Denver and play against other teams in the state," Slagle said.
For most the team, this is their last year with Little League.
"I just want to go to state,? player, Kyle Kukus, said. ?I?m ready to play ball.?
All season long parents, family, and friends have been watching the boys play from the stands, each game getting closer and closer to the championship.
That?s a dream that might not be a reality.
Team mom, Shelly Shoemaker, says, "We always tell kids work hard, do good, and you'll go far. Well, they've worked hard they've done good and then they're stopped."
The problem is with paper work that wasn't completed correctly when players from Palisade joined the Orchard Mesa team.
"We found out just the other night, Thursday night, that the boys weren't going because there were not waivers that were supposed to be signed for the Palisade boys to be on our league,? Shoemaker said. ?We also found out that the whole season it was not legal."
The right paper work was due a month ago.
"There are a lot of us that if they would have said, hey I need this done or can you check into this, there would have been somebody that could have figured it out and taken care of it,? Shoemaker said.
The team is trying to get the problem fixed.
They?ve worked with the district, the region, and now national Little League officials.
"We?re waiting for a call back from them to see if we can get it taken care of but so far it?s a no go,? Shoemaker said.
"I?m still hoping we can go to Denver and prove that we're one of the better teams," Slagle said.
Orchard Mesa Little League director, Larry Smith, is taking responsibility for the upset.
He says miscommunication is the cause and is sorry the boys are the ones being penalized.
