The painful relationships ? in between the 'i love you' and 'i hate you'

The painful release

There are couples that last for decades. Then, there are couples oh, so good that seems to end abruptly and painful.

I once dated a man who seemed to be ?the one?. We lived together, with two cats in an apartment in the suburbs. Every morning we?d look into eachothers eyes, filled with love and compassion. We?d eat toast for breakfast and sometimes maybe even for lunch. We?d go on trips together, a romantic getaway in the summer chaos.
I loved him. I lived with him for nearly a year. I thought that he was surely the one, and so did he, because he wanted to marry me and had already planned out the time and date for his proposal.

Until everything changed.

He?d come home at night, reeking of booze. He hid bottles of rum in our storage unit, just across the hall. He?d get in a cab with me after a drunk night out, and scream at me. We?d come home and argue and scream and throw plates at each other. He?d come home in such a rage that he felt that it would be neccessary to put me in my place ? held by the throat up against a wall. I felt it was neccessary to save myself by opening a window to escape. He felt that it was not the time for me to leave, and pulled me back in and threw me across the room, kicking me while I was still on the ground.
He felt I had done him so wrong that I needed to be beaten. I felt that I had to get the fuck out before I was killed. I ran to the door, but he was too quick. I ran to the other door and barely made it outside.

I remember feeling like the man I loved and the man I had seen that night was a totally different person. In fact, he was not the man I loved any more. He was just an empty shell of a man, a ghost of what he used to be. It broke my heart.

I threw myself on my bike and rode it for miles until I reached my friends house. I cried and cried and she held me, while she was just wearing her pajama ? after all, it was four in the morning.

I ended that relationship. And it was painful. My mother told me to please reconsider leaving him, after all ?he is a great man and will surely love and provide for you for the rest of his life.? She said those words because she saw him as the man I loved. I still saw him as the ghost. I got myself another apartment which I could barely afford. I left my cats behind because I could not take care of them. I was shocked to my very core of what had happened that night.
I got my stuff and told him that it was over.

I don?t really got over the violence, the screaming and the drunk man I once loved. I do not love him any more, but I still run into him from time to time. He?s with somebody else, and all I can think of that is..
?I hope he?s good to her.?

Researchers identify mechanisms that allow embryonic stem cells to become any cell in the human body

Researchers identify mechanisms that allow embryonic stem cells to become any cell in the human body [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 18-Jul-2012

New understanding of the mechanisms that give embryonic stem cells their plasticity could allow preparation of cells in the laboratory for treating Alzheimer's and other degenerative diseases

New research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem sheds light on pluripotencythe ability of embryonic stem cells to renew themselves indefinitely and to differentiate into all types of mature cells. Solving this problem, which is a major challenge in modern biology, could expedite the use of embryonic stem cells in cell therapy and regenerative medicine. If scientists can replicate the mechanisms that make pluripotency possible, they could create cells in the laboratory which could be implanted in humans to cure diseases characterized by cell death, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes and other degenerative diseases.

To shed light on these processes, researchers in the lab of Dr. Eran Meshorer, in the Department of Genetics at the Hebrew University's Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences, are combining molecular, microscopic and genomic approaches. Meshorer's team is focusing on epigenetic pathwayswhich cause biological changes without a corresponding change in the DNA sequencethat are specific to embryonic stem cells.

The molecular basis for epigenetic mechanisms is chromatin, which is comprised of a cell's DNA and structural and regulatory proteins. In groundbreaking research performed by Shai Melcer, a PhD student in the Meshorer lab, the mechanisms which support an "open" chromatin conformation in embryonic stem cells were examined. The researchers found that chromatin is less condensed in embryonic stem cells, allowing them the flexibility or "functional plasticity" to turn into any kind of cell.

A distinct pattern of chemical modifications of chromatin structural proteins (referred to as the acetylation and methylation of histones) enables a looser chromatin configuration in embryonic stem cells. During the early stages of differentiation, this pattern changes to facilitate chromatin compaction.

But even more interestingly, the authors found that a nuclear lamina protein, lamin A, is also a part of the secret. In all differentiated cell types, lamin A binds compacted domains of chromatin and anchors them to the cell's nuclear envelope. Lamin A is absent from embryonic stem cells and this may enable the freer, more dynamic chromatin state in the cell nucleus. The authors believe that chromatin plasticity is tantamount to functional plasticity since chromatin is made up of DNA that includes all genes and codes for all proteins in any living cell. Understanding the mechanisms that regulate chromatin function will enable intelligent manipulations of embryonic stem cells in the future.

"If we can apply this new understanding about the mechanisms that give embryonic stem cells their plasticity, then we can increase or decrease the dynamics of the proteins that bind DNA and thereby increase or decrease the cells' differentiation potential," concludes Dr. Meshorer. "This could expedite the use of embryonic stem cells in cell therapy and regenerative medicine, by enabling the creation of cells in the laboratory which could be implanted in humans to cure diseases characterized by cell death, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes and other degenerative diseases."

The research was funded by grants from the European Union (ERC, Marie Curie), Israel Science Foundation, Ministry of Science, Ministry of Health, The National Institute for Psychobiology, Israel Cancer Research Foundation (ICRF), Abisch-Frenkel Foundation and Human Frontiers Science Program (HFSP).

The research appears in the journal Nature Communications as Melcer et al., Histone modifications and lamin A regulate chromatin protein dynamics in early embryonic stem cell differentiation.

Video: Robo-copters fly in formation without crashing into each other

23 hrs.

Tiny four-rotor flying drones are able fly in formation akin to the Navy?s Blue Angle fighter jets, only instead of pilots? keen eyes, they use super-fast image processing to avoid mid-air collisions.

The quadrotors take and send snapshots of markers on the ground to a host computer, which uses the images to calculate the drones? positions, Kenzo Nonami of Chiba University in Japan, tells video news site Diginfo TV.?

Their location and attitude are calculated every 10 milliseconds, allowing them to ?fly in a stable manner,? he said.

The technology has been demonstrated with four .66 pound (300 gram) drones, though even more can fly in formation.

Nonami said the quadcopters may find commercial use in surveillance tasks such as looking for people at a compromised chemical plant or an erupting volcano.?

While you could do this?with one drone, ?the more there are, the faster they can obtain information,? he said.

Presumably, if people were spotted, rescue teams would be dispatched.

A new study published today in PLoS Medicine re-evaluates the role of public reporting of hospital-acquired infection data. The study, conducted by Nick Daneman and colleagues, used data from all 180 acute care hospitals in Ontario, Canada. The investigators compared the rates of infection of Clostridium difficile colitis prior to, and after, the introduction of public reporting of hospital performance; public reporting was associated with a 26% reduction in C. difficile cases.

The authors comment "This longitudinal population-based cohort study has confirmed an immense burden of Clostridium difficile infection in Ontario, while heralding mandatory hospital reporting as one potential means to reduce this burden".

French president?s companion regrets tweet

Posted by AFP on July 15, 2012

Valerie Trierweiler says she will ?count to 10? before sending another tweet/AFP

PARIS, Jul 15 ? French First Lady Valerie Trierweiler has said she will now think twice before tweeting, a month after she used the microblogging site to undermine her rival, the president?s former partner.

Trierweiler sent out a tweet wishing good luck to an opponent of Segolene Royal ? Francois Hollande?s ex-partner and mother of their four children ? in last month?s legislative election.

Olivier Falorni, who was kicked out of the Socialist Party for refusing to step aside to allow Royal to run in his La Rochelle fiefdom, trounced her with 63 percent of the vote.

?I will count to 10 before tweeting,? Trierweiler told French television on Saturday.

Hollande had said earlier in the day: ?Private affairs are resolved in private. And I have told this to those close to me so they can scrupulously accept this principle.?

The tweet attracted widespread media coverage with the French press calling it an embarrassment to Hollande shortly after his own election victory in the presidential race.

There has long been speculation of intense rivalry between Royal and Trierweiler, who acquired the nickname Tweetweiler over the affair.

Hollande stood loyally by Royal as she battled Nicolas Sarkozy for the presidency in the 2007 race, but he had reportedly been in a relationship since 2005 with Trierweiler, a twice-divorced 47-year-old mother of three.

Paperwork keeps O.M. baseball team from championship

ORCHARD MESA, Colo -

Efforts to get an Orchard Mesa baseball team to Denver are underway.

The team has only lost one game all season, but faulty paperwork is keeping them from the state championship.

"We worked so hard and all of that was pretty much for nothing now," team captain, Kyle Slagle, said.

Orchard Mesa Little League's senior all-star team is spending the summer together.

"We?re out here practicing every night for two hours," Slagle said.

They?re putting in all that time for one goal.

"To go to Denver and play against other teams in the state," Slagle said.

For most the team, this is their last year with Little League.

"I just want to go to state,? player, Kyle Kukus, said. ?I?m ready to play ball.?

All season long parents, family, and friends have been watching the boys play from the stands, each game getting closer and closer to the championship.

That?s a dream that might not be a reality.

Team mom, Shelly Shoemaker, says, "We always tell kids work hard, do good, and you'll go far. Well, they've worked hard they've done good and then they're stopped."

The problem is with paper work that wasn't completed correctly when players from Palisade joined the Orchard Mesa team.

"We found out just the other night, Thursday night, that the boys weren't going because there were not waivers that were supposed to be signed for the Palisade boys to be on our league,? Shoemaker said. ?We also found out that the whole season it was not legal."

The right paper work was due a month ago.

"There are a lot of us that if they would have said, hey I need this done or can you check into this, there would have been somebody that could have figured it out and taken care of it,? Shoemaker said.

The team is trying to get the problem fixed.
They?ve worked with the district, the region, and now national Little League officials.

"We?re waiting for a call back from them to see if we can get it taken care of but so far it?s a no go,? Shoemaker said.

"I?m still hoping we can go to Denver and prove that we're one of the better teams," Slagle said.

Orchard Mesa Little League director, Larry Smith, is taking responsibility for the upset.

He says miscommunication is the cause and is sorry the boys are the ones being penalized.

E-currency Trading ? An Alternative to Futures & Forex Trading ...

I find it amazing that nearly everyday I receive something online or offline that is the greatest break-through in Trading. You know the stuff. This ?system? or that ?method? has been thoroughly tested and back-tested in every conceivable fashion and is wildly successful. Some work for a period of time but most do not. The decades old statistical fact still remains, 90+% of Futures Traders will lose all of their trading capital within their first year of trading. Now there is a new and promising alternative.

Enter e-Currency Trading. In simple terms e-currency is Internet Money. E-Currency allows the purchase of Internet goods and services at lightning speed and most importantly with a high level of security. Much higher than credit cards, bank transfer etc. The demand for e-currency should only grow as Internet Commerce grows.

So what does this have to do with trading? There are literally hundreds of different e-currencies. Each is backed by an underlying Currency or a precious metal. The need arises to exchange between these e-currencies or convert an e-currency to hard cash. Much like the Euro is to the European Union. We can profit from the exchanging process and profit from the fluctuation of the underlying currency value.

The same basic strategies apply to e-currency trading as with futures trading. Supply and demand dictates price primarily. You could buy e-currency that has historically performed well (buying the trend) or go the opposite way and buy those that are under-performing, looking for a turn-around. You can even chart them if you like.

Leverage, that double-edged sword that Futures Traders are so familiar with is also present in e-Currency Trading. You can borrow against your portfolio to buy more e-currency. The compounding affect is almost outrageous. Some would argue that you never have to pay back the leverage. I contend that it is paid back if you closed your e-Currency account, because your final balance would be less the amount leveraged. The point here is the leverage in futures trading is often times the demise of a well intended trader versus the leverage afforded an e-currency trader combined with the daily compounding affect creates portfolio growth at a phenomenal rate. It is not uncommon to see portfolio growth of 20 ? 40% per month.

Futures Trading and e-Currency Trading have a common downside. The learning curve is huge and can be frustrating and costly. Each has unique terminology, which is impossible to work around until you have a good understanding of the meaning. Thankfully in this world of information, we are able to find resources online and offline that shorten that curve. How much it is shortened is dependent on how much time you want to dedicate.

Industry experts have debated for years the optimum amount one should fund their futures trading account with. The obvious moving target is enough capital to withstand the drawdown periods. Many factors go into this but I?ve seen numbers range anywhere from $10,000 to $50,000 and up. If this is the case then there is little doubt why most futures traders lose as most are willing to fund only the amount required to cover Margin or the Brokers account minimum usually a few thousand dollars. One of the biggest reasons for small business failure is being under capitalized, the same holds true in futures trading.

E-Currency Trading is different in that the experts recommend starting with a few hundred dollars and let the system build your account. Whatever route you choose, only trade with risk capital.

E-Currency Trading certainly has advantages over traditional futures trading and may well be worth your serious consideration.

Q: My 6-year-old Maltese seems pretty healthy to me, but my veterinarian still insists that the dog get vaccines every year. A holistic vet told me that since dogs just stay home and walk around the block, in reality, vaccines aren't needed every year. He went on to say that veterinarians give the injections, knowing this is a risk to pets' health, so they can make money. Do you believe these yearly vaccines are necessary? -- R.R., Cyberspace

A: "Vaccines serve a real purpose. Every dog should be evaluated for protection on an annual basis," says Dr. Link Welborn, past president of the American Animal Hospital Association (AHHA), and chairperson of the committee that formulated the AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines. "However, not every dog needs to be vaccinated every year, and not every dog requires every vaccination. It's important to consider which vaccines are appropriate. In my own practice, only about 15 percent of the dogs are vaccinated (in any given year)." That's because some vaccines are offered every three years, and because not all vaccines are appropriate for all dogs.

The Canine Vaccination Guidelines recommend annual titer testing, which helps determine a dog's immunity. The guidelines also recommend that vets take lifestyle and geography into consideration. For example, in New England, a vaccine for Lyme disease is likely a good idea for most dogs. However, in Tampa, FL, where Welborn is located, Lyme isn't as much of an issue. If the Lyme disease vaccine is considered appropriate, that vaccine, and others -- such as the vaccine for the canine influenza virus -- are only available annually, so there's no other choice except to vaccinate for these problems each year.

While certainly vaccines cost veterinarians money (after all, they have to purchase them), they don't rely on vaccine income to drive their businesses. They never have. However, some consumers still believe veterinarians make big bucks from vaccines. That simply isn't true. In fact, some veterinarians today make that point by only charging a few dollars for vaccines, or even offer them at no cost. What's most important, says Welborn, is preventive care. Sometimes such care includes vaccines, but often it doesn't.

A small percentage of pets may have a reaction to vaccines, and if a reaction occurs once to a specific vaccine, it may likely recur. In some cases, those pets can skip the vaccine all together.

However to suggest all vaccines should be avoided by all pets is a dangerous approach. For starters, in most places, a rabies vaccine (available in annual, 3- or 5-year forms) is the law, as it should be. Also consider that diseases like canine distemper have not disappeared. In areas where distemper is rare, people are vaccinating.

The Canine Vaccine Guidelines are available, at no charge, here.

Q: I know this sounds crazy, but my red-footed tortoise, Gonzalez (as in Speedy) seems a little off, a little slow. He's eating, but not as much as in summers past. Should I be worried? -- D.C., Nashville, TN

A: Maybe. Tortoises don't typically roll over on their backs to indicate they aren't feeling well. "You may be picking up on some red flags," says Dr. Byron de la Navarre, a Chicago veterinarian with a special interest in reptiles and other unusual pets. What's more, de la Navarre has a red-footed tortoise of his own, named Sweets.

"In the winter, this sort of behavior might be considered normal, but typically not in the summer," he says. "I suggest you see a veterinarian with experience treating tortoises." To find a veterinarian with an interest in cold-blooded pets, check out the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians.

?

Q: Could my 13-year-old cat have Parkinson's disease? Hercules shakes his whole head before he falls asleep. It's like what happens when you touch a cat's ear and it sometimes flicks. Should I be concerned? -- L.E., Cyberspace

A: "While cats don't get Parkinson's disease, you should be concerned enough to figure out what's going on," says Dr. Elizabeth Colleran, of Chico, CA, past president of the American Association of Feline Practitioners. The list of possible problems is long, from dental disease to something going on inside one or both of Hercules' ears, from a polyp to excess wax or ear mites. If he's also circling or sometimes has a tilted head, the problem may be vestibular disease.

Since this shaking apparently only happens before your cat takes a nap, videotape the behavior so you can play it back for your veterinarian.

If your veterinarian seems stuck, it might be a good idea to seek a referral to an American Association of Feline Practitioners Cat Friendly Practice.

Q: Why does my cat touch her paw to the water before drinking? I thought cats don't like to get their paws wet. -- G.R., Fort Myers, FL

A: In general, cats don't enjoy getting their paws (or any part of their bodies) wet. However, it may be more important for your cat to determine the water level. Cats are generally far sighted, and since no one makes kitty bifocals, your cat may prefer patting the water rather than misjudging its depth and getting water up her nose. A small rubber ducky or children's toy that floats might help your cat detect the water surface. It's also possible your kitty is testing the water temperature to make sure it's just right for drinking. Or maybe the splashing is her idea of fun!

Developers pull plans for New Mexico ghost town

By JERI CLAUSING | Associated Press ? Published July 13, 2012 Modified July 13, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? The company behind plans to build a scientific ghost town says it is pulling out of a deal to develop the make-believe city near Hobbs.

Pegasus Global Holdings in May announced with much fanfare its selection of a 15-square mile site in Hobbs and Lea County near the Texas border for development of the Center for Innovation, Technology and Testing. Officials said they had hoped to break ground by the end of June.

Last month, Robert Brumley, managing director of the project, said groundbreaking would likely be delayed until August because of problems closing on the land. On Friday evening, he said the group was pulling out "due to some very complicated and unforeseen issues with acquiring the land." The deal involved both public and private parcels.

The group said it would begin reviewing proposals from 15 other New Mexico communities that had expressed an interest in the project. Hobbs and Las Cruces were the two finalists in the original site selection process.

"We are still very committed to locating in New Mexico if a site can be identified," Brumley said in a statement Friday evening.

New Mexico was initially selected for the project because of its abundance of land and its federal research facilities like White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico and Los Alamos and Sandia national labs.

CITE officials insisted the land deal was the only reason behind the decision.

"While the acquisition of the land has taken more time than expected, the CITE project itself continues to move forward and the design and lab development is currently ongoing," Brumley said.

CITE's plans call for a $1 billion city without residents to help researchers test everything from intelligent traffic systems and next-generation wireless networks to automated washing machines and self-flushing toilets.

The town will be modeled after the real midsize American city of Rock Hill, S.C., complete with highways, houses and commercial buildings, old and new. No one will live there, although they could as houses will include all the necessities, like appliances and plumbing.

The point of the town is to enable researchers to test new technologies on existing infrastructure without interfering in everyday life and communications networks. For instance, while some researchers will be testing smart technologies on old grids, others might be using the streets to test self-driving cars.

It was unclear whether project developers would give priority to a bid from Las Cruces, which along with Hobbs was one of just two finalists named in the initial selection phase.

Gov. Susana Martinez joined officials in announcing final site selection for the project in May, which she hailed as "one of the most unique and innovative" economic development projects the state has seen.

Individuals have a moral duty to buy health insurance, three ...

In a provocative commentary published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), three bioethicists argue that the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) ? the requirement that everybody who can afford it must purchase health insurance ? is morally appropriate.

In fact, argue NIH Clinical Center bioethicists Tina Rulli and David Wendler and University of Pennsylvania bioethicist Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, it is the moral duty of individuals to reduce certain burdens they pose on others, including the financial burden of asking others to pick up the cost of their emergency medical care.

Many individuals forgo health insurance assuming they will not need medical care. However, everyone is at substantial risk of needing medical care ? even young adults. Fifteen percent of 18- to 29-year-olds have asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, or hypertension. More than half of these individuals are overweight or obese. In 2007, there were 2.6 million live births among women aged 18 to 29 years. One-fourth of all human immunodeficiency virus/AIDS diagnoses occurred in 20- to 29-year-olds. Almost 24% of 18- to 29-year-olds received treatment in an emergency department during the past year.

Routine acute care and emergency care are expensive. The cost of delivering a newborn ranges from $9,600 for a vaginal delivery to more than $21,000 for a cesarean delivery with complications. The average cost for an appendectomy is $15,850. Unless uninsured individuals pay out of pocket or incur debt, these expenses are passed on to hospitals, clinics, physicians, insured individuals, and taxpayers. In the aggregate, uncompensated care poses an enormous financial burden, totaling an estimated $56 billion in 2008.

Individuals cannot just say that they want to waive their right to health care, the authors of the commentary add, because doing so then places an unfair burden on physicians in emergency medical situations.

Even if individuals can waive their right to health care, it does not follow that physicians may decline to rescue them. If a motorcyclist who has waived the right to health care is involved in a crash, physicians should not stand by and allow the individual to bleed to death. A physician's duty to provide acute and emergency care is not grounded solely in individuals' right to be rescued; it is a requirement of benevolence and compassion at the core of medicine.

Declining to force a blood transfusion on an objecting Jehovah's Witness respects that individual's autonomous choices and values. In contrast, allowing motorcyclists who desire assistance to die simply because they failed to buy health insurance is morally unacceptable.

Opponents of the ACA's individual mandate have argued "that requiring people to contribute to the collective good is inconsistent with respect for individual liberty" and that appealing to the collective good "could justify requiring individuals to buy gym memberships or eat broccoli," write Rulli, Emanuel and Wendler.

But, they conclude, "because physicians and hospitals have a duty to rescue the uninsured by providing acute and emergency care, individuals have a corresponding duty to purchase insurance to cover the costs of this care. Requiring individuals to meet this obligation is consistent with respect for individual liberty and does not imply that they must buy gym memberships or eat broccoli."

You?ll find the commentary on the JAMA website.
