Official: Winning lottery ticket sold in Maryland

In the hopes of striking it rich, people across the country are scooping up Mega Millions tickets. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 1:56 a.m. ET: The Associated Press is reporting that Maryland lottery officials have announced early Saturday their state sold what could become the world's largest lottery payout of all-time, but it?was unclear if that ticket holder would get sole possession of the $640 million jackpot.

Carole Everett, director of communications for the Maryland Lottery, told the AP the winning Mega Millions ticket was purchased at a Baltimore County store. She said it's too early to know any other information about the lucky ticket-holder or whether others were sold elsewhere in the nation.

The winning numbers for the Mega Millions prize were 46, 23, 38, 4, 2; mega ball was?23, lottery officials said late Friday.

National lottery officials were expecting to list early Saturday on their website how many winning tickets were sold and from what states, but Maryland sent out its news release and called media organizations hours before the scheduled announcement. The headline of its news release said the winning sale was "one of several nationwide," but Everett told The Associated Press she couldn't immediately confirm any others.

"We're thrilled," Everett told the AP. "We're due and excited."

The estimated jackpot dwarfs the previous $390 million record, which was split in 2007 by two winners who bought tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.

In most participating states, tickets were on sale Friday until 10:45 p.m. EST, lottery officials said. The drawing was held in Atlanta at 11 p.m. EST.

Hopeful future millionaires formed long lines at stores.

Odds of winning the entire jackpot were 175 million to one, said Margaret DeFrancisco, president and chief executive of the Georgia Lottery Corporation.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

New information coming from Nielsen suggests that smartphones are now in nearly 50 percent of U.S. mobile subscriber households with Android claiming 48 percent of individuals who have owned a smartphone. 32.1 percent chose Apple's iPhone and RIM's BlackBerry captured the remaining 11.6 percent. World News - Urine-soaked 'virgin boy eggs' are a springtime taste ...

    Aly Song / Reuters

51-year-old vendor Ge Yaohua eats a hard-boiled egg cooked in boys' urine at his stall in Dongyang, Zhejiang province.

    By Reuters

DONGYANG, China - Officials in China have listed a local food delicacy of eggs soaked in boys' urine as part of the region's intangible cultural heritage.

Every spring, street vendors in the city of Dongyang sell 'virgin boy eggs' as a unique snack.

Basins and buckets of boys' urine are collected from primary school toilets. Eggs are then soaked and cooked in the urine.

There is no good explanation for why it has to be boys' urine, just that it has been so for centuries.

The scent of these eggs being cooked in pots of urine is unmistakable as people pass the many street vendors in Dongyang who sell it, claiming it has remarkable health properties.

    Aly Song / Reuters

A vendor pours a bucket of boys' urine into a pot of hard-boiled eggs.

"If you eat this, you will not get heat stroke. These eggs cooked in urine are fragrant," said Ge Yaohua, 51, who owns one of the more popular "virgin boy eggs" stalls.

"They are good for your health. Our family has them for every meal. In Dongyang, every family likes eating them."

It takes nearly an entire day to make these unique eggs, starting off by soaking and then boiling raw eggs in a pot of urine. After that, the shells of the hard-boiled eggs are cracked and they continue to simmer in urine for hours.

Vendors have to keep pouring urine into the pot and controlling the fire to keep the eggs from being overheated and overcooked.

Ge said he has been making the snack, popular due to its fresh and salty taste, for more than 20 years. Each egg goes for 1.50 yuan ($0.24), a little more than twice the price of the regular eggs he also sells.

Many Dongyang residents, young and old, said they believed in the tradition passed on by their ancestors that the eggs decrease body heat, promote better blood circulation and just generally reinvigorate the body.

"By eating these eggs, we will not have any pain in our waists, legs and joints. Also, you will have more energy when you work," said Li Yangzhen, 59, who bought 20 eggs from Ge.

The eggs are not bought only at street stalls. Local residents are also known to personally collect boys' urine from nearby schools to cook the delicacy in their homes.

The popularity of the treat has led the local government to list the "virgin boy eggs" as an intangible cultural heritage.

    Aly Song / Reuters

51-year-old vendor Ge Yaohua (R) passes a bag of hard-boiled eggs cooked in boys' urine to a customer holding her baby on a street in Dongyang, Zhejiang province.

But not everyone is a fan. Chinese medical experts gave mixed reviews about the health benefits of the practice, with some warning about sanitary issues surrounding the use of urine to cook the eggs.

Some Dongyang residents also said they hated the eggs.

"We have this tradition in Dongyang that these eggs are good for our health and that it would help prevent things like getting a cold," said Wang Junxing, 38. "I don't believe in all this, so I do not eat them."

When getting out a financial loan you have to take into account the ...

It would seem that a bad credit score score is enough to assure obtaining huge particular loans is fantasy instead than reality. Although the actuality is the fact it truly is doable to acquire even a $10,000 private financial loan with negative credit history.

The rationale why this is the case is that every loan provider is fascinated in a single factor: receiving their money back again, with fascination. After all, individual financial loans are generally viewed as challenges.

The excellent news is the fact that you can find quite a few things that is often done to considerably raise that amount of self esteem for the lender. So, by way of these actions, your odds of obtaining financial loan approval in spite of negative credit rating are greatly improved.

Offer you the Loan company Safety

The easiest way to safe a $10,000 personalized mortgage with undesirable credit rating is usually to offer you some security for the loan company. This fundamentally implies giving some collateral that is of equal benefit to the amount sought ? $10,000.

The chief advantage to supplying collateral is the individual personal loan becomes a secured personal loan, and for that reason a reduced rate of interest is used. So, the month-to-month repayments are reduced plus much more manageable.

Needless to say, the unfavorable level to keep in mind is that through the use of collateral to have personal loan approval in spite of terrible credit score, the actual item is in danger. Ought to there at any time be considered a dilemma with creating repayments, then it will become the home with the financial institution.

    Incorporate a Cosigner

The trouble with collateral is the fact that not absolutely everyone incorporates an one product well worth sufficient to protected a $10,000 particular bank loan with undesirable credit. But a cosigner removes that challenge.

A cosigner commits to creating the required repayments really should the borrower fail to, which aids to convince loan companies of private financial loans which they will get their cash again.

Nonetheless, the cosigner also wants to become approved through the lender in advance of there might be any possibility of receiving financial loan approval in spite of undesirable credit history. The perfect applicant may have a great credit history history and adequate cash flow to be capable to make the repayments ought to the necessity crop up.

    Split the Bank loan Sum

A 3rd alternative will be to divide precisely what is needed right into a number of small personal loans. Obtaining a $10,000 personalized loan with bad credit score will probably be extremely tricky, but smaller financial loans of most likely $2,000 or $3,000 may be secured significantly much more quickly ? generally without having credit history check out truly utilized.

But there are many aspects to remember when acquiring 4 or 5 smaller personalized loans. For starters, every loan stands by yourself, which implies that each financial institution will probably apply pressure to acquire repayments built in time.

Also, it?s important to try and do your calculations properly. 5 financial loans of $2,000 each and every might have 5 diverse rates of fascination. This might indicate that the overall curiosity repayments tend to be more than it might be on a single $10,000 bank loan. Naturally, to protected personal loan approval regardless of negative credit rating the additional price might must be approved.

Repayment schedules on every single bank loan can also be significant. A single $10,000 personal loan with poor credit history is going to be structured only, but acquiring many financial loans from different lenders means agreeing different schedules. A $1,five hundred cash advance, by way of example, might should be repaid in 30 days, though a $3,000 personal mortgage might have a 90-day deadline.

Generally occasions it would not make any difference how nicely you intend out your excavation challenge, you find you run right into a shortage of products available to manage requirements without working more than some time allocated. You then should make the choice ? lease that which you need or go ahead and buy new tools.

It is not always a clear lower determination to create so let us just take a glance in a couple of aspects which will arrive into engage in.

    Expenditures of Renting Excavation Equipment.

With out doubt, rental corporations rub their hands with glee especially for costly large machinery employ. A lot of them will rent the excavation products for you on an every day or weekly foundation which may show for being an incredibly costly alternative, especially if the undertaking is even more held up resulting from other aspects likewise.

Renting excavation tools and off highway dump trucks frequently catch the attention of the highest rental costs within the weighty machinery market. You may be hunting in a price tag choice of as much as $18,000 a month not like any attachments or buckets you would possibly will need. This may be inside your funds should your organization is significant and profitable and the task is huge adequate but could demonstrate to get over and above attain to some significantly less founded business. If you are undecided in which the subsequent large jobs are coming from then renting tools would be a wiser final decision than acquiring. You won?t possess the devices nevertheless it is best than acquiring it sitting down close to unused. You won?t have the fret either of having to repair it if it breaks down ? the rental hire firm will take on that obligation.

What exactly Regarding the Alternative Of Getting Excavation Devices?

In case you are thinking which the equipment you need will be needed for even more initiatives, it makes sense to seriously think about acquiring the excavation gear you require alternatively than renting it, in particular in the event you have numerous bigger jobs about the calendar.

Certainly, using this type of solution you can be liable for the typical service, routine maintenance and fix with the excavation products you purchase. But acquiring what you need to have will most certainly save you dollars ultimately if you do have all those even more large tasks while in the pipeline.

In the long run the choice is yours on whether or not you purchase or rent but needless to say you must take into consideration your finances thoroughly and make the most effective determination for your corporation. When you genuinely don?t have the finances or money to acquire everything you want, renting will be the best choice naturally.

How 'super Irish' man sparked Trayvon Martin protest

    Courtesy of Kevin Cunningham

Kevin Cunningham started a petition on change.org calling for the prosecution of the man who shot Florida teen Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26.

    By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

When Kevin Cunningham read about the killing of teenager Trayvon Martin early this month, he turned to a platform he was just starting to experiment with ? social media ? to add his voice to the few that were expressing outrage about a Florida police department?s handling of the case.

Little did he know when he started an online petition demanding that authorities prosecute the shooter, that it would garner more than 2 million signatures and help draw international attention to the 17-year-old?s shooting death on Feb. 26.

?I decided to take the skills that I?ve been working on ? and apply them to the situation and see how well it would work out, and it just went crazy on me,? said Cunningham, 31, of Washington, D.C., who created the petition?on the Change.org website on March 8.

?What I?ve learned through social media, you don?t have to go through institutions anymore. ? Any individual with any idea can make it work if they have (a) connection to the Internet,?? he added.

Video shows Zimmerman shortly after Martin shooting

Cunningham, a red-head who describes himself as the ?super Irish? son of activist parents, said he learned about the Martin case when he read a story posted on a listserv for Men of Howard, an informal, secretive fraternity that he joined while attending the historically black Howard University as a law student.

When he suggested?starting an online appeal calling for prosecution of the shooter, neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, the proposal was met with both support and skepticism from other subscribers.

?At Howard, they tell us as soon as you get there, ?If you?re going to be a lawyer, you?re either a social engineer or a parasite on the society.? ? that?s how I think about life???is to be a social engineer, and that?s what my parents were always trying to be," he said.

When Cunningham launched the appeal, others in the fraternity posted it to their social networks. Later, current students and other alumni shared it, too.

Does surveillance video of George Zimmerman in police custody on the night of Trayvon Martin's death contradict claims that he was beaten and bloodied during an altercation with the Florida teen? NBC's Ron Allen reports.

    'Made me feel very good'
On the first day, Cunningham believes the petition got 100 signatures. Then it quickly reached the 1,000 mark as it spread to Florida, California and beyond. Cunningham said he noticed that some of the signers identified themselves as family members or friends of Martin.

?You could tell there was a lot of people who knew him and liked him,? he said. ?It definitely had an impact on me ? it made me feel very good about what I had done, what we had done.?

Zimmerman has admitted to shooting Martin. His representatives have asserted he acted in self-defense, but the incident has sparked outrage in many quarters because Martin was unarmed and, according to critics of police handling of the case, may have been targeted because he was black.

When the number of signatures on Cunningham?s petition crested 10,000 after a few days, Change.org contacted him about transferring it to Martin?s parents, who had begun making media appearances to speak on behalf of their slain son.

Cunningham said he was happy to do so, noting several times in an interview with msnbc.com that he had wanted to remain behind the scenes.

He also played down his role in the petition?s explosive growth, saying the number of signers when he transferred it to Martin?s parents was ?not even a rounding error? compared to where the number stands now.

?At the same time, I feel like I did kick the stone that turned into the snowball that caused the avalanche,? he said.

    Grateful for a stranger's gesture
    Martin's parents expressed gratitude.

"When we heard about the petition, we were overwhelmed that someone we didn't know would take the time and effort to raise awareness about our son," said his mother, Sybrina Fulton.?

"From the beginning, our only goal has been getting simple justice for?our son," added his father,?Tracy Martin.?"The fact that more than 2 million people have signed this petition shows there are?still a lot of good people in this world."

Transferring a petition on Change.org is extremely rare, said Megan Lubin, a spokeswoman for the website, where nearly 100,000 petitions have been posted since it began operations in 2007.

?Trayvon?s parents were very quickly becoming the face of the national story. It was really their story that was speaking to folks ? and I think the decision was made to reach out and see if they would be interested in leading the campaign,? she said.

Congressman escorted from House after wearing hoodie in Trayvon Martin tribute

Lubin noted that an average of 15,000 petitions are started on the site every month, ?so for a petition to climb this fast and to grow to this size is truly remarkable.? She attributed the growth in part to ?celebrities who have made it their sole mission over their social media pages ?to call for folks to sign this petition.?

?It goes directly to the story and Trayvon?s parents,? she added, ?but it also demonstrates ? the incredible power of the platform and social media in general.?

    Website's largest petition ever
The petition became the largest in the website?s history last week, surpassing the number of signatures on one launched last year calling for a law to make it a felony for a guardian not to notify authorities of a child disappearance within 24 hours, in the wake of the Casey Anthony case.

Cunningham?s effort was one of the dozens, if not hundreds, of efforts to publicize the case online?that helped to keep the conversation going about Martin ?even though there (weren't)?a lot of big developments in the case? prior to the release of the 911 tapes, said Kelly McBride, senior faculty for ethics at The Poynter Institute.

The parents of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old student fatally shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer in a gated Florida community, defend their son's reputation amid new reports that portray him as a teen often in trouble. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

?It gave all of those people who were motivated a place to point to and say, ?Here do something, you know, sign this,? and it also ? became like a central blog for who was making interesting comments on the case,? said McBride, who spoke with Cunningham for a column tracing how the story evolved on social media.

Lubin said it?s up to Trayvon Martin?s parents?to decide what to do with the petition.

?The point of Change.org is so that people feel empowered and able to start something at any time and it has to be their campaign,? she said. ? Our role is very much ??helping people achieve that goal.?

Cunningham, who works as a social media coordinator for a Palestine children?s charity, KinderUSA, said he ?fell in love? with social media during the Egyptian revolution and was inspired by the activists he encountered in the virtual world.

He was particularly moved by the story of Khaled Said, whose death at the hands of police was credited with helping trigger the Egyptian uprising that toppled the government of Hosni Mubarak.

?I thought that this could be a similar situation where the death of the one person could be the thing that triggers us to re-look at our society,? Cunningham said. ?I think we need to revolutionize the justice system, for sure, and maybe our culture as well.?

Asked whether he thought people might be surprised to learn that a white man was responsible for the petition demanding justice for a black teenager he had never met, Cunningham said he didn?t ?believe in black and white.?

?The only race I believe in is the human race,? he said.

Tuesday we shared with you a story of an alleged Pinterest spammer who spilled his guts to The Daily Dot about how lucrative his business was, especially on the social networking bulletin board site, where he claimed he hauls in $1,000 a day. Wednesday, the website said the man "may or may not actually be a spammer," but that those who engage in similar work "not only confirmed the facts in his account as realistic but also derided him for sharing his secrets."

The spammer, "Steve," said in his original interview that he made so much money on Pinterest by using spambots tied to his Amazon.com Affiliate account. Then, when The Daily Dot asked for a follow-up interview, he said he had been pranking about his spam success.

"While we can?t verify Steve?s identity, spammers from the site Black Hat World" corroborated that "Steve" not only knew what he was talking about in terms of spam techniques, but was right on the money, literally, The Daily Dot said Wednesday.?

" 'I have a few sites doing $1000/day right now and I would NOT tell anyone about them or how they earn,? wrote meathead1234 in a discussion about the interview," said the website.

Others on the Black Hat World site were ticked off as well, including this remark from "inumel":

its because of idoits like this, who "brag" or who just aren't stealth about their earnings and their marketings are the reason why these things get patched so quickly... Now more companies whill be flooding bhw to see if people have been "marketing" on their respected sites ...

And patched Pinterest may be. As one Black Hat World member noted, "because of this Pinterest has changed their algorithm again today" to throw spammers off course.

Four No. 1 seeds advance to women's Final Four

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) ? Brittney Griner and Baylor are two wins from a perfect season.

Still, it won't be easy for the Lady Bears to become the seventh women's team to go undefeated. They'll have to get past two other No. 1 seeds at the Final Four in Denver ? Stanford and either Notre Dame or Connecticut. It's the first time since 1989 that all four top seeds reached the semifinals of the NCAA tournament.

No real surprise, though, because the Lady Bears, Cardinal, Irish and Huskies have dominated all year long. They've held the top four spots in The Associated Press poll virtually all season and have combined to lose only twice to anyone but themselves.

Even the four No. 2 seeds posed no problem in the regional finals as all four of the top teams won by double digits.

"If you're a No. 1 seed there's a reason you're a No. 1 seed," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "What you have in our situation, you have to beat the best teams in the end of the year because they don't get beat by the lesser teams."

The pressure of playing on the national stage in Denver shouldn't bother any of them. After all, Stanford, Notre Dame and UConn were in the Final Four last season. Baylor was there two years ago.

Stanford and Connecticut have reached five straight Final Fours ? matching the Huskies' mark from 2000-04 and LSU from 2004-08.

Should the Lady Bears win it all, they will become the first men's or women's team in NCAA history to finish a season with 40 wins.

"It wasn't a goal of ours, but now it has to be because these kids want to win a championship," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. "I don't know about the history of the game. You have to remember, we really don't talk about the old days. ... I just look at it as another number. I don't know that the kids look at it any differently. They won't look at 40 wins, but they sure will remember that national championship."

Baylor advanced to the national semifinals by easily beating Tennessee 77-58 on Monday night as Griner continued to be the most dominant player in women's basketball. She had 23 points, 15 rebounds and nine blocks ? falling one short of a triple-double.

"It's not over. We've got our next game and it gets tougher as you go. We have to focus and get ready for our next game," Griner said.

That game will be against Stanford, the only one of the teams left that Baylor hasn't beaten this season. The Cardinal have won a school-record 32 straight and are trying to end a 20-year championship drought.

Stanford has been led by its own superstar, Nnemkadi Ogwumike. She had 39 points in the regional semifinal win over South Carolina and followed that up with 29 points in the Fresno Regional final against Duke.

"She has put our team on her back almost all year," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "Coaching her is something really special. We just want to keep it going. I don't want any game to be her last game."

Ogwumike is looking forward to the challenge of playing against Griner and the Lady Bears.

"I've never done it so I'm excited," she said. "I feel like everybody but me has played against her. I'm just really excited. We're going to Denver, one. It's more exciting to play her in Denver than in the regular season. I'm really looking forward to this matchup. It's great to have a challenge like that. I played against her in high school ? that's when I learned to shoot the 3."

While Stanford and Baylor haven't played yet this season, Notre Dame and Connecticut are very familiar with each other, having squared off three times. The Irish took the first two meetings to win the Big East regular-season title outright. UConn won the championship game of the conference tournament.

It's the second straight season that the teams will play in the NCAA semifinals. Notre Dame ended UConn's run at a third consecutive national title last year before losing to Texas A&M in the title game.

"That's not right," Auriemma said of having to face Notre Dame again. "But the Big East is the Big East. We've got two of the best teams in the country. They've been one of the best teams all year long. They have national championship game experience. That's going to be as hard to win as any other time we've played them. You would love to say you want to see someone different, but the reality is they are really good. They are really, really, really good."

It's been a strange season for UConn. Even though his team ran through the early part of the schedule, Auriemma knew it was just a matter of time before the Huskies' shortcomings were exposed. Losses to Baylor and Notre Dame on the road were understandable, but it wasn't until the end of February that Connecticut really came to a crossroads.

The Huskies lost to St. John's on senior night, snapping a 99-game home winning streak. Nine days later, they were beaten by Notre Dame. But those two defeats got the Huskies refocused and they've been unstoppable ever since. They cruised to the Big East championship and rolled through their first three NCAA tournament games before pulling away from Kentucky in the Kingston Regional final.

Now, they're back in the Final Four for the 13th time in the last 18 years.

Notre Dame has played with a purpose all postseason, yearning to get back to the title game and finish what it started last year.

"Absolutely," Irish guard Natalie Novosel said. "Actually it was on today when we were flipping through channels. It was reminiscent of where we wanted to be. It's a constant reminder, a motivator. We were determined to get to the Final Four and we did it, and now we want to get to where we were last year."

The Irish have won all four NCAA tournament games by double figures, including a 44-point rout of St. Bonaventure that matched the 22-year-old record for most lopsided victory in the round of 16. Then they blew out Maryland 80-49 in the Raleigh Regional final.

But to get back to the championship game, Notre Dame will have to figure out a way to stop UConn again.

"To be honest, I think they're our nemesis," Novosel said. "It wouldn't be the Final Four if we didn't play them."

The Big Blue II? Free-diving with dolphins off Italy

The son of Jacques Mayol, the French diver who inspired the cult film "The Big Blue", has turned his father's Mediterranean island house into a celebration of his ecological vision and passion for nature.

Jean-Jacques Mayol has transformed Villa Glaucos, which is perched at the top of a cliff on Elba Island off the coast of Tuscany, into a retreat for free-diving courses aimed at yoga lovers who hope to swim with wild dolphins.

"The whole world knew Jacques as a great diving champion, but he dedicated his life to the relationship between man and nature," said Jean-Jacques, who runs the Team Mayol courses from the "dream house" his father built.

"In his relationship with the dolphin world he was searching for similarities between humans and aquatic animals," said the Swedish-American, who follows his father in using meditation and yoga to improve his free-diving.

Jacques' passion for the sea, captured in "The Big Blue", led him to explore theories on man's ties with dolphins and whether humans may have a dormant aquatic organ -- ideas he developed in his 1979 book, "The Dolphin Within Man".

Tests carried out during one of his most famous dives in 1976, when he broke through the 100m barrier, showed that his heart beat had decreased from 60 to 27 beats per minute, a phenomenon usually seen in whales, seals, and dolphins.

The research showed that "man's physiology changes when he goes into the deep. Jacques was convinced that while dolphins remembered their common origins with man, man has forgotten them," Jean-Jacques said.

The 56-year-old came to Italy from Florida to pay homage to a father whose battle to promote environmentalism preceded contemporary understanding of the issues of climate change, and "to continue his work and spread his philosophy."

"When you see how man and his greed destroy nature... Jacques tried to inspire, he didn't want to preach. He was like a dolphin: if you can be inspired by dolphins, it's possible to create a better world," he said.

"Man must consider everything to live in harmony," he added.

Tanned, smiling and energetic, Jean-Jacques said he plans to convert the villa into "a so-called museum", which would house "photos of Jacques, personal objects and videos" so that "we can show the public the man behind the diver."

"We have received a lot of requests from the fan community over the last 10 years and we want to revive Jacques' work. Sadly, much of the focus has been on his death, and his philosophy has been for the most part forgotten," he said.

Jacques Mayol committed suicide in the villa on December 22, 2001 and his ashes were scattered along the Tuscan coast.

Humans "have lost touch with nature. He knew how to find it again through his dives. We too have to rediscover the planet," Jean-Jacques said.

Looking wistfully out across the vast expanse of sea from the house's large terra cotta terrace, he said: "each of us has Jacques' philosophy somewhere hidden deep down inside us, we just have to listen to it."

Getting in rhythm helps children grasp fractions, study finds

    Thursday, March 22, 2012

Tapping out a beat may help children learn difficult fraction concepts, according to new findings due to be published in the journal Educational Studies in Mathematics. An innovative curriculum uses rhythm to teach fractions at a California school where students in a music-based program scored significantly higher on math tests than their peers who received regular instruction.

"Academic Music" is a hands-on curriculum that uses music notation, clapping, drumming and chanting to introduce third-grade students to fractions. The program, co-designed by San Francisco State University researchers, addresses one of the most difficult -- and important -- topics in the elementary mathematics curriculum.

"If students don't understand fractions early on, they often struggle with algebra and mathematical reasoning later in their schooling," said Susan Courey, assistant professor of special education at San Francisco State University. "We have designed a method that uses gestures and symbols to help children understand parts of a whole and learn the academic language of math."

The program has shown tangible results at Hoover Elementary School in the San Francisco Bay Area, where Courey's study included 67 students. Half the group participated in a six-week Academic Music curriculum and the rest received the school's regular math instruction.

Students in the music-based program scored 50 percent higher on a fraction test, taken at the end of the study, compared to students in the regular math class.

Significant gains were made by students who struggle with academics. The researchers compared the test scores of lower-performing students in both groups and found that those who were taught the experimental music curriculum scored 40 percent higher on the final fractions test compared to their lower performing peers in the regular math class.

"Students who started out with less fraction knowledge achieved final test scores similar to their higher-achieving peers," Courey said. "Lower-performing students might find it hard to grasp the idea of fractions from a diagram or textbook, but when you add music and multiple ways of learning, fractions become second nature to them."

Courey devised Academic Music with music teacher Endre Balogh. They borrowed aspects from the Kodaly method, a Hungarian approach to music education that incudes movement, songs and nicknames for musical notes, such as "ta-ah" for a half note.

The curriculum helps children connect the value of musical notes, such as half notes and eighth notes, to their equivalent fraction size. By clapping and drumming rhythms and chanting each note's Kodaly names, students learn the time value of musical notes. Students learn to add and subtract fractions by completing work sheets, in which they draw musical notes on sheet music, ensuring the notes add up to four beats in each bar or measure.

The program has also proven itself at Allen Elementary School, a San Bruno public school -- not included in the study -- that has been using the Academic Music program since 2007.

"Academic Music brings music into the classroom and gets children to learn math in a different way that's symbolic and not dependent on language," said Kit Cosgriff, principal at Allen Elementary School, who introduced the program to help the schools' diverse student body learn math in ways that are not language-based. The school serves many students from low-income families, and 60 percent of students don't speak English as their first language.

"In every lesson I've observed, the children have been excited and enthusiastic about learning fractions," Cosgriff said. "It's a picture of what you would like every class to look like."

Cosgriff believes the school's recent jump in standardized test scores reflects the impact of Academic Music. Since implementing the program for all third-grade math classes, the percentage of third-graders who scored proficient or above on the California Standards Test for math increased from 63 percent in 2006 to 70 percent in 2007 and 75 percent in 2008. On the California Achievement Test (CAT/6) for mathematics, the percentage of third graders who scored at or above the national average increased from 51 percent in 2006 to 72 percent in 2007 and 75 percent in 2008.

Academic Music is a 12-lesson program that is designed to be taught by regular classroom teachers without the help of a music teacher. Courey's next step is to publish curriculum materials for teachers.

"We're suggesting that teachers put music in their arsenal of tools for teaching math." Courey said.

"It's fun, it doesn't cost a lot, and it keeps music in the classroom."

"Academic Music: Music Instruction to Engage Third Grade Students in Learning Basic Fraction Concepts" has been accepted for press in the journal Educational Studies in Mathematics and will be published online next week.
