At DB Heating and Cooling, we get a lot of questions about UV (ultraviolet) germicidal lights and how they can improve indoor air quality in Woodcliff Lake, NJ?area homes.? Basically, these lights destroy harmful microorganisms in the ductwork and other components of your heating and air conditioning system. This keeps any airborne pathogens from spreading throughout your home. ?Here?s how they work:

UV germicidal?lights are also called UVGI systems, and they use an ultraviolet light to destroy the DNA of harmful organisms, thereby killing them and rendering them incapable of reproducing at the same time. While UV germicidal lights are Ideal for medical facilities, office buildings, hotels, and schools, they can also be used in residential applications. UVGI systems are a cost-effective way to improve indoor air quality, and they can be installed with most existing heating and cooling systems.

UV germicidal lights can destroy pollutants that the air cleaners don?t target, but when used alongside air cleaners, UV lamps can provide even better protection against bacteria, viruses, and toxic mold spores. If you have known issues with moisture control or mold growth in your home, UV lights can improve indoor air quality by killing new mold growth; however, the moisture problem will need to be remedied to get the full effect.

Acne treatment ? Using pads to treat acne - Food Fitness Life Love

It has been a long time that acne is treated with topical creams, oral medications and injections. This was a quite difficult period for a patient because all these treatment choices tend to cause a lot of discomfort to the patient. However, there is a good news. The news is that many acne pads are available, these days to cure acne.

However, people are quite apprehensive about this treatment option because it may not be as effective. However, the experts have already proved that these treatment options have treated acne in many people and that too effectively.

In order to know about the actual effectiveness of acne pads, one needs to know the exact causes of acne. Experts feel that follicle pore blocking and presence of bacterium and acnes inside the follicle and excess amount of production of sebum.

When it comes to medication options, all medications do not treat all the causes mentioned above.

Some of the active ingredients such as salicylic acid were an integral part of gels, face washes and creams. Now, all these are used in acne pads.

Here are some useful instructions in order to help using acne pads to treat acne.

a) Step one:
The first crucial step is to clean the skin with a medicated soap regularly.

b) Step two:
Now wipe the entire affected area with the help of an acne pad.

You need to start the procedure with a single application on a daily basis and thereafter, increase the usage with about two or three times in a single day if required. However, remember that a lot of salicylic acid can dry the skin.

If you notice any sort of peeling, red skin or itching during application, it would be wise to stop using these pads on an immediate basis.

Take special care to keep acne pads away from the eyes, mucous membranes and lips.

It would be wise to use acne pads only after consulting a health care practitioner. You need to take special care on following all the instructions provided on the package of the product. The medication is to be used only externally on the skin. The medication should not come into contact with broken skin, nose, mouth, eyes and groin.

Acne pads need to be used 1 to 3 times on a daily basis. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after using acne pads. Make sure you consult your doctor prior to using acne pads.

2 policemen killed after Egypt soccer verdict

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian security officials say a senior police officer and a policeman were shot dead in the Mediterranean city of Port Said after a judge sentenced 21 people to death in connection to one of the world's deadliest incidents of soccer violence.

Officials say that the police were killed when relatives tried to break into the Port Said prison to free the 73 defendants in the case held there.

At least 75 people were wounded in Saturday's violence outside the prison. Port Said residents also cut off the main road leading to the city.

Officials spoke anonymously in line with regulations.

The violence comes after a judge sentenced fans of Port Said's Al-Masry team to death for taking part in the Feb. 1, 2012, soccer violence, which killed 74 fans of Cairo's Al-Ahly club.

(AP) ? Forget the endless debates about the euro or government debts. What does the future hold?

The World Economic Forum at Davos is always a showcase for new research, trends and ideas. And those at the annual gathering of the world's elite don't shy away from making predictions, even if they missed foreseeing seminal events like the Great Recession or the Arab Spring revolts.

Here's some predictions from this year's participants:

WEATHER AND WATER

Climate change will lead to more and more extreme weather, which will cause tremendous economic upheaval, predicts New York University economist Nouriel Roubini.

"It's not just that New York is going to be underwater 30 years from now," he said, referring to the devastation caused last fall by Hurricane Sandy.

Oxford University physicist Tim Palmer ? who said as a scientist he preferred probabilities to prediction ? noted there is a 10- to 15-percent chance that the Earth will warm by 6 degrees Celsius within a century, leading to "catastrophic consequences for humanity" ranging from extreme weather to rising seas.

Vali Nasr, dean of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, said many countries will start running out of water in the coming years.

"Water is the new oil," he said.

A TECHNOLOGICAL SURGE

Laura Tyson, a business professor at the University of California at Berkeley, said one of the great concerns should be "the employment effects of technology," with so many jobs being rendered obsolete by scientific or technological advances.

Discussions of such advances were everywhere at Davos.

Sebastian Thrun, a computer science professor at Stanford University and leader of Google's Self-Driving Car Project, said he thinks Google co-founder Sergey Brin's prediction that within five years driverless cars will be on the streets used by regular people is going to happen.

"It'll be a while before they're going to be mainstream, and there'll be all kinds of interesting questions coming about security, privacy, safety of the system as a whole," Thrun said. "But if they are available within five years for general consumers, I think within 15 years you ought to be able to buy one of those."

MENTAL ILLNESS UNDERSTOOD

Edward Boyden, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who directs a neural engineering research group, says new technologies for analyzing the brain will produce significant advances in fighting mental illness.

"Right now we know that certain cell types in the brain are impaired in schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder or autism," he said.

If scientists can develop new technologies to image the brain and control the brain's cells, he said "over the next half-century or so we should be able to really understand how these networks" generate emotion.

Then, in the case of mental illness, "we can insert information into the cells in order to re-sculpt their dynamics and fix what's broken," Boyden said.

Technology entrepreneur Eric Anderson said biotechnology and medicine "are eventually going to be information sciences, with your genes... will determine treatment."

THE LIGHTEST STUFF

Julia Greer, an assistant professor of materials science and mechanics at the California Institute of Technology, says the world is craving a useful, ultra-superlight material to work with.

Her research group collaborated with Hughes Research Lab (HRL) and the University of California, Irvine, to recently develop the world's lightest solid material. She predicted that in 10 to 15 years it will be used as fuel cell catalysts, as acoustic damping devices on submarines, as anti-reflective layers in solar cells, and as components of vehicles sent into space.

The new material, called a micro-lattice, is made up of tiny hollow tubes of nickel-phosphorous that are angled to connect ? and contains 99 percent air, Greer said. It can also be used for high-temperature thermal batteries, heart stents and blood clot catchers, she said.

On a related topic, Roy Johnson, the chief technology officer for Lockheed Martin, predicted huge advances in 3-D printing.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

One of the most famous predictions is Moore's Law, named after Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, which says that computing power doubles every two years or so. It has proven stunningly correct so far, putting new technological devices in everyone's pockets.

But how long will this law hold? Paul Jacobs, the CEO of Qualcomm, said it's not so certain anymore.

The implications of effectively infinite computing power are staggering ? no more waiting for a power-up or a download; every song, movie and TV episode instantly available; and even the possibility of what scientists call artificial intelligence.

But Jacobs told The Associated Press that the law might be valid only "a couple of more generations."

"I'm worried. In the next couple of nodes we're going to stop getting those numbers unless somebody figures out something," he said.

YOUTH OF THE WORLD UNITE

Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, now the U.N. special envoy for global education, said huge advances in the Internet and technology are enabling young people to connect with each other and "this is opening up the world in a way that has never happened before."

"Young people are beginning to see that the gap between the opportunities and rights they have been promised and the opportunities and rights that are delivered to them is wholly unacceptable," he said at a session on the forum's sidelines. "And the sense that they are being deprived of these opportunities and rights is, I think, going to be the big motivating force over the next few years."

The Shrinking Proton: Particle Is Smaller Than Thought

How many protons can dance on the head of a pin? The answer is nowhere near as straightforward as one may think ? and it might offer new insights into one of the most well-tested theories in physics.?

An international team of scientists recently tried to find out the actual size of a proton, one of the ingredients (along with neutrons and electrons) of the atoms that make up our bodies and the world around us.

Reporting this week in the journal Science, the researchers found that the particle's radius is 0.84087 femtometers. A femtometer is a billionth of a billionth of a meter, or so small that the wavelength of gamma radiation is 100 times longer. The new measurement is about 4 percentsmaller than the currently accepted radius of 0.8768 femtometers, and that small difference presents a puzzle.

If the smaller size is correct, then there's something missing in physicists' understanding of quantum electrodynamics, which governs how light and matter interact.

Proton error?

Aldo Antognini, a physicist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and first author of the paper, told Livescience the difference could mean one of three things.

First, that there is some error in the earlier work, though that isn't likely given how many times various experiments were repeated.

The second possibility is that some piece of the calculations for the proton's size is missing. "Maybe we don't understand fully proton structure," Antogninisaid.

The third explanation is that the current theories of quantum electrodynamics are wrong, though chances of that seem slim given that the theory works very well and it has been tested many times. [Wacky Physics: The Coolest Little Particles in Nature]

This result isn't the first time a discrepancy has shown up. In 2010, Antognini, working with an international team led by Randolf Pohl of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany, found the proton radius seemed to be 0.84185 femtometers.

How to measure a proton

To find the size of a proton scientists have used three methods. One is electron scattering: firing negatively charged electrons at positively charged hydrogen nuclei (protons) and measuring how they are deflected. The scattering pattern can then give an idea of how big the region of positive charge is.

The second method is to measure how much energy it takes to get an electron to move to different orbital regions around a nucleus. Electrons usually stay in regions that are a certain distance from the nucleus. Increase their energy and they become excited, and move to a different region, called an orbital. The electrons then fall back into their unexcited states and emit a photon. By looking closely at how much energy it takes to move an electron from one orbit to a higher-energy one, and the wavelength of the photon emitted when the electron drops back to its lower-energy orbital, it's possible to estimate a proton's size.

Last, the method used in the latest set of experiments, involves muonic hydrogen, which is a proton with a muon, rather than an electron, orbiting around it. Like electrons, muons are negatively charged, but they are 207 times heavier. That means they fly closer to the proton, and it takes more energy to move them to higher-energy orbitals. The greater energy differences make measuring them easier. Firing a laser at the muonic hydrogen excites the muon, moving it to a different orbital. The muon then falls back to its lower-energy state, emitting an X-ray photon.

The first two methods, used over decades, had come up with the larger value for the proton's radius. The latter method, which scientists say has a smaller uncertainty, found the smaller one. These calculations, though, are quite complex.

New proton measure

Antognini's team, carrying out experiments at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, not only did the muonic hydrogen experiment a second time, they also took steps to ensure a more accurate measurement. The discrepancy remained. "Maybe there is something in [proton] structure only highlighted by muons," Antognini said. [Weird: Top 10 Unexplained Phenomena]

That's why the new value is proving such a mystery. Quantum electrodynamics (QED) is probably right, and it's also not likely that the earlier experiments were that far wrong due to simple errors, experts say.

"There might be some missing terms in the calculations," said Helen Margolis, a research scientist at the National Physical Laboratory in the U.K., who was not involved in the research. "QED has been tested to incredible levels so far, but the mathematical foundation is not as secure as you might like."

Chad Orzel, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Union College and author of "How to Teach Physics to Your Dog" (Scribner, 2010), said the results are good for physics generally, because of the questions they raise. "It's really boring when all the measurements and theory agree with each other. This kind of disagreement gives us something to talk about that isn't the Higgs boson."

Ganassi picks up key sponsor for NASCAR's McMurray | TribLIVE

By Ralph N. Paulk

Published: Wednesday, January 23, 2013, 10:50?p.m.
Updated 20 hours ago

CONCORD, N.C. ? Even after a disappointing 2012 season, Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing continues to attract sponsorship funding to position its drivers to legitimately compete for an elusive Sprint Cup championship.

Chip Ganassi, co-owner of EGR, announced Wednesday his stock-car operation has partnered with Cessna Aircraft Company to sponsor the No. 1 Chevrolet SS driven by 2010 Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray.

Ganassi, a Fox Chapel native, said the agreement with Cessna and parent company Textron reflects growing confidence that his NASCAR program has positioned itself to realize the success of his Indy Racing League program that has won the Indianapolis 500 four times.

?In this economy, I?m very proud of what we?ve accomplished,? Ganassi said. ?To have a company like Textron to have the courage to come into the sport says a lot about it getting on offense and not managing defensively.

?I don?t know how many people are announcing new sponsorships this week, but we are pretty proud to have one. It?s assuring for us to know companies believe in us. We like it when a company like Textron sees some value in being involved in the team across the board.?

It?s a significant sponsorship agreement with Cessna, considering McMurray and EGR teammate Juan Pablo Montoya have failed to qualify for the Chase the past two seasons. McMurray finished tied for 20th and Montoya finished 22nd in the 2012 points standings.

?We made a lot of changes in 2012 and invested a lot in engineering, software and development,? Ganassi said during Wednesday?s NASCAR Media Tour. ?Frankly, it didn?t translate as fast as I wanted it to on the track. But our crew chiefs agree we are light years ahead of last year, and they think the early-season testing has been promising.

?We invested a lot of money into our business last year. We had a good enough bottom line to invest in our team, and we?ll continue those investments.?

However, EGR experienced some angst when McMurray?s primary sponsor the past three years, Bass Pro Shops, switched to Stewart-Haas Racing. But the outdoor recreation company will sponsor the No. 1 car for two races this season.

?This deal allows us to focus on racing,? McMurray said. ?With the new (Generation-6) car, we can?t afford any distractions heading to Daytona.?

Even with the loss of Bass Pro Shops, Ganassi said the team?s overall sponsorship is up compared to last year.

?Bass Pro had been great to us, but I think their decision was a function of there being some assets available on Tony Stewart?s car,? Ganassi said. ?They?ve had a long relationship with Tony, so it was kind of a natural thing for them to do that.?

Ganassi said he never considered running a partial 36-race Cup schedule with McMurray. He was confident Cessna would come aboard after he met last year with company executives at Sonoma.

?The racing industry is built on the same principles of our company ? a need for speed,? said Scott Ernest, Cessna?s president and CEO. ?The scope and success of Chip Ganassi?s racing teams across all components of racing gives us a strong presence as we invest in the sport.?

Teenagers avoid early alcohol misuse through personality management

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Personality-targeted interventions delivered by trained teachers and school staff decrease alcohol misuse in at-risk teens and delay their classmates' alcohol uptake.

In a study published in the very first issue of the new journal JAMA Psychiatry, researchers from Sainte-Justine University Hospital Center, University of Montreal and King's College London have shown that personality-targeted school interventions delivered to high risk adolescents manage to reduce and postpone problem drinking, which is responsible for 9% of the deaths in young people between the ages of 15 and 29 in developed countries. Furthermore, by delaying alcohol uptake in at-risk youth, low-risk youth apparently gain group immunity due to reduced drinking within their social network.

"Two factors determine problem drinking: personality and peer pressure," explains Dr. Patricia Conrod, the study's first author, who supports the assumption that approaching at-risk youth from the angle of mental health rather than information on the dangers of alcohol is more effective at preventing early-onset alcohol misuse. "Teaching young people how to better manage their personality traits or vulnerabilities helps them make the right decisions in given situations," she explained, "whether it is a matter of overcoming their fears, managing thoughts that make them very emotional, controlling their compulsions, analyzing objectively the intentions of others or improving their self-perception."

The researcher conducted a two-year study called Adventure in which high-school school staff in London, England, were trained to intervene with their ninth grade students (median age of 13.7 years) in order to determine whether their intervention could reduce or postpone the participants' misuse of alcohol in the long term. The development of consumption patterns was measured by observing the drinking rates, problem drinking rates, binge drinking rates, and growth in binge-drinking rates. In addition, the study also attempted to examine a possible group ("herd") immunity effect associated with these interventions.

Participating schools were divided into two groups (control and intervention). The "intervention" school group conducted the intervention at the beginning of the study, whereas the "control" school group benefited from the program and training later on. Out of the total sample, 1,210 students were identified as being more at risk of developing future alcohol dependence after having filled out a personality questionnaire. They presented at least one of the following personality profiles: "anxiety-sensitivity," "hopelessness," "impulsivity" or "sensation-seeking." Trained school facilitators met these students during two brief personalized group sessions and asked them, based on their personality profile, to describe their reactions to various real-life scenarios and try to react to them in a different way.

"The advantage of this approach is that it is easy to implement as opposed to community-based approaches. Teachers can be trained to implement the program and closely adhere to its objectives very effectively, especially since only two interventions are required," explained Dr. Conrod.

A similar study is now under way in 32 high schools in Montreal, Canada. The study is also adding a component that analyses youth styles of thinking. Schools interested in taking part in the program can visit the project's website at:

J.Lo, Aretha defend Beyonce's performance

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

There's another question being raised in the did-she or didn't-she Beyonce lip-sync discussion: Does it matter? Not according to several fellow performers, who are speaking up about the controversy, as Jason Kennedy reported for TODAY on Friday.?

As he noted, Jennifer Lopez appeared on "The Daily Show" to explain why certain performances require pre-taped vocals. "In certain stadiums, in certain venues, they do pre-record things, because you're going to have that terrible 'slapback,'" she said. (Slapback occurs when there's a delay in vocals or instruments, and is sometimes used to great effect -- but live, it can be problematic.)

The technical issues involved in large-venue performances like stadiums exaggerate this effect, which means singers have to make a decision over whether to risk going off-key, echoing or encountering other possible issues. Cold, dry temperatures can also be challenges for vocal cords. When faced with both challenges, even a veteran like Aretha Franklin, who had a few rough spots during her performance at President Obama's first inauguration, can have issues.

And with the national anthem, a difficult song even in ideal situations, other singers have lip-synced, including Whitney Houston, who sang the song at the 1991 Super Bowl.

As Franklin explained, if Beyonce had taken precautions, she shouldn't be blamed for it. "I could certainly understand her pre-recording to assure and guarantee her performance," she said in a phone interview.?

Everyone from fans to audio engineers has speculated whether or not Beyonce sang live or with some assistance, but likely it was some combination of the two, in the end. Whatever the answer, all eyes -- and ears -- are likely to be trained on her in ten days, when she sings at Super Bowl XLVII.

What's Causing My Acne? Techniques For Breakout Management ...

Acne

Acne

Acne is quite common, but most people let it affect them emotionally. Don?t allow acne to have control of your life any longer. Use this guide to help you handle acne and get you on the road to clearer, more beautiful skin. With time and efforts, you could truly improve your skin.

Try to de-stress your life as much as possible. Having too much stress can contribute to acne. Make a daily routine for yourself that consists of exercise or meditation. If you alternate brief periods of physical activity with brief periods of peaceful contemplation, you can reduce your stress, improve your fitness and think more clearly.

One way to avoid acne breakouts is to sleep on a fresh pillowcase each night. Ponder it for a moment. Think about your face rubbing against this all night. Avoid this contamination by washing your pillowcases often and using a clean one every night.

Use only one cream at a time to treat acne. When people are rushed to rid their skin of acne, they often try applying several products at once. You will only be over-applying chemicals to your skin and damaging it.

Extreme temperatures can cause acne to worsen. When it?s warm out, your body will generally sweat more. Sweat clogs pores and irritates your skin. This can often cause acne. When the weather is cold, it can cause skin dryness. Both are to be avoided.

If you are exercising or in a hot environment, clean your face often. Keep facial cleansing wipes with you if you are away from home. This will enable you to clean up impurities and bacteria. Though these types of cleansing wipes are very convenient and easy to use, they should not replace your morning cleanser.

Although it is tempting to squeeze a zit, for health reasons, it is best not to. A medicated cream is better for dealing with particularly troublesome hot-spots. You risk infecting your acne and causing a scar if you bother your pimples. The uneven discolorations that often result from picking at acne can take years to fade away.

The health of your organs impacts the health of your skin. Caring for yourself starts with caring for your body?s internal systems. If you are healthy on the inside, you are far less likely to have problems with acne.

If you have a pimple that is particularly red and swollen, try holding an ice cube wrapped in a washcloth against it for 20 minutes or so. Ice can decrease both redness and inflammation. Additionally, some spots can really hurt and ice can numb the pain. Ice can do the job of an anti-inflammatory, but without the harmful side effects of chemicals.

Avoid consuming alcohol often. By imbibing alcohol above moderate levels, your skin can react by breaking out with acne. Stick to limited drinking in social situations and only one or two glasses of wine with a meal.

Use the information provided that pertains to your skin. You can give your skin that healthy glow by making wise choices. Clearing up your complexion can do wonders for your acne issues.

Global car industry sharpens U.S. focus for 2013

PARIS/DETROIT (Reuters) - The U.S. car market's rebound may be slowing - but it still looks like the best bet to many of the global industry's top brass as they converge on Detroit for the 2013 auto show.

With Europe in a protracted meltdown and some emerging markets flagging, the United States will increase its share of world auto sales this year even as its economy cools, analysts and executives predicted ahead of Monday's media opening.

American light vehicle sales are expected to rise 4 to 7 percent with prices remaining strong, according to most estimates. That would outpace the 2.6 percent global expansion forecast by consulting firm LMC Automotive.

That is an alluring prospect for European brands fleeing the carnage at home and Japanese automakers hurt by a politically driven consumer backlash in China - where growth and pricing are less predictable for everyone.

"Even if China overtook the U.S. as our biggest-volume market, the U.S. is and will remain our second-most important market after Germany," Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller said.

The Volkswagen-owned sports car maker thinks Europe would be "lucky" to see a recovery before 2015, Mueller said in an interview. "The situation is as critical as ever."

U.S. OUTPERFORMS

The North American International Auto Show, better known as the Detroit auto show, opens to the public on January 19.

Among new vehicles to be unveiled by European carmakers at this year's event are the SQ5 high-performance crossover from VW's Audi brand, BMW's M6 Gran Coupe and the redesigned Maserati Quattroporte.

The European market, already near a 20-year low, will shrink another 1.7 percent this year to 17.8 million light vehicles, LMC predicts, while the United States grows 4.2 percent to 15.1 million.

By comparison, U.S. auto sales averaged nearly 17 million vehicles a year in the decade prior to 2008 when the recession cast a pall.

Although rising more sedately than last year's 13.4 percent surge, projected U.S. deliveries will account for 18.2 percent of the 82.7 million global total, compared with 17.9 percent in 2012.

"Right now, the U.S. is the healthiest auto market in the world," said John Casesa, senior managing director with Guggenheim Securities.

Sales growth will be close to zero in Brazil and will slow to 3.4 percent in Russia, according to the same forecasts, while China's expansion accelerates to 10.2 percent from 5.9 percent.

But with Chinese manufacturing capacity for 1.5 million additional vehicles coming on stream, some analysts warn that pricing and profitability could suffer this year.

Balancing China's enormous growth potential, "a certain amount of unsteadiness is a factor," Porsche's Mueller said.

Japanese automakers are still smarting in China, where public outrage over a territorial dispute has translated into more than 100,000 lost sales for Toyota Motor Corp and Nissan Motor Co Ltd since September.

That can only increase their appetite in the United States - where car sales by Asian and European brands both averaged 22 percent growth, compared with a 12 percent gain for domestic nameplates.

The yen's recent decline against the dollar will also give Japanese imports more edge, General Motors Co Chief Executive Dan Akerson acknowledged.

"People are going to be very competitive in this market," Akerson told reporters on Wednesday. "This is the market with the best margins."

While GM lost ground last year, it has broadly "held the line" since emerging from bankruptcy in 2009 and will soon benefit from the renewal of its aging lineup, Akerson said.

ENCOURAGING SIGNS

New pickup trucks being shown next week by Ford and GM's Chevrolet and GMC may help the incumbents fight back.

Ford is also cautiously optimistic about 2013, the company's chief economist said this week.

A coming payroll tax hike may weigh on sentiment, Ellen Hughes-Cromwick said, but signs of a housing market rebound and progress in President Barack Obama's fiscal policy standoff with Congress are "favorable developments."

While economic growth will likely slow to 1.6 percent from last year's 2.2 percent, Citi analyst Itay Michaeli said, a glut of aging vehicles on U.S. roads promises to unlock "pent-up demand" for replacements in years to come.

"We may have only begun to see the U.S. sales recovery," Michaeli said.

The bullish outlook shows that American carmakers' drastic job and factory cuts of 2009 are still paying off, said Michael Tyndall of Barclays Capital.

"The U.S. took its medicine in the last crisis and capacity has remained relatively tight, so pricing remains disciplined," the London-based analyst said.

"The operative word is growth - whereas Europe is going backwards again."

Santorum takes up fight against Hagel nomination

(AP) ? Republican opposition to Chuck Hagel as the next defense secretary swelled from inside and outside the Senate Thursday as a former Senate colleague launched a campaign to block his nomination.

Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator who served for a decade with Hagel, said his grassroots organization, Patriot Voices, will lead a nationwide campaign to stop Hagel from succeeding Leon Panetta as head of the Pentagon.

"While I respect Sen. Hagel's service to America, I cannot stand by and support his nomination," Santorum said in a statement. "His anti-Israel, pro-Iran mindset makes him uniquely unqualified to serve as our Defense secretary."

Hagel, nominated Monday by President Barack Obama, has faced criticism that he is soft on Iran and weak in his support for Israel. Pushing back in private meetings with defense officials, he has told them this week that he backs strong international sanctions against Iran and believes all options, including military action, should be on the table.

He also has reached out to members of the Senate and sought to explain his views on national security. One of his first calls was on Monday to Sen. John McCain, a fellow Vietnam War veteran who worked closely with Hagel on a number of issues but split with him over the Iraq war.

The relationship between the two hit a rough patch in 2008, when Hagel declined to endorse McCain in the presidential race. Hagel's wife, Lilibet, backed Obama, while the former Nebraska lawmaker stayed on the sidelines.

In a statement on Monday, McCain said Hagel served the nation with honor in Vietnam. But McCain expressed serious concerns about some of the positions Hagel has taken on national security issues.

A handful of Senate Republicans have announced that they will vote against Hagel's nomination, while other GOP lawmakers remain noncommittal. Hagel is tentatively scheduled to meet with Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who has not said how she will vote, when lawmakers return the week of Jan. 21.

While Democrats hold a 55-45 advantage in the Senate, and Hagel would need a simple majority to win confirmation, he would need 60 votes if Republicans try to filibuster his nomination.

Although Hagel served in the Senate for two terms and was a member of the Foreign Relations and Intelligence panels, several Republicans and Democrats say he didn't build many close relationships and tended to chart his own course.

Of the 45 Senate Republicans, just 25 served with Hagel. Among the newer, more moderate members, Hagel is certain to face a tough time persuading Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., who has been at the forefront in pushing for unilateral sanctions against Iran and is a fierce proponent of Israel.

Santorum, who unsuccessfully sought the GOP presidential nomination last year, recently led a successful fight to defeat a U.N. treaty on the disabled, convincing several Senate Republicans to oppose ratification. He overcame such vital treaty supporters as McCain and former Sen. Bob Dole.

Supporters of Hagel's nomination are also lobbying on his behalf. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell will appear on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday to argue for the nominee.

The Environmental Link? Vitamin D and Multiple Sclerosis | NCPAD ...

Jan 10, 2013
Tagged with: chronic health conditions multiple sclerosis prevention supplements Vitamin D The Environmental Link? Vitamin D and Multiple Sclerosis

If you have multiple sclerosis (MS) or know someone who does, you know that the condition is a chronic, degenerative disease affecting the nervous system. Globally, the incidence of this disease has been rising (not just because doctors are getting better at diagnosing it), and the condition?s causes are not well understood.

Scientists have long acknowledged a global ?gradient? in MS rates, with the lowest rates near the equator and gradually rising rates to the north and south. The potential connection between MS and vitamin D levels or sun exposure increasingly gained attention in the scientific community as study after study documented this trend.

The evidence regarding environmental causes of MS still has a long way to go before it is adopted as medical fact, but research is mounting in favor of a biological link between vitamin D levels and the risk of developing MS. Clinical trials are currently underway to investigate the link. What does this mean for those who do not have MS but may be at risk for it?

Hedging Your Bets by Getting Some Sun

Most North Americans do not have adequate levels of vitamin D, particularly during the winter months. The recommended daily intake for adult men and women is 600 IU, although more may be necessary to make up for a deficiency. Exposure to the sun is the most natural way to obtain sufficient levels of vitamin D, but many people are trapped indoors during the limited daylight hours of winter.

Some research also indicates that supplements of Vitamin D3 may improve symptoms among individuals with MS after regular doses over 12 months. So, sun and vitamin D for everybody, right? Despite the lack of a full-fledged embrace by the medical community, the short answer seems to be ?Yes.?

The fact is, everyone needs vitamin D. Sun exposure, a balanced diet, and even supplements can be healthy ways to obtain sufficient vitamin D. Provided doses do not exceed 4,000 IU per day (unless under the guidance of a physician), plenty of vitamin D does not seem to cause harm. Too much sun exposure, however, can cause skin cancer and other problems?so it shouldn?t be someone?s exclusive source of vitamin D.

Tips for Increasing Your Vitamin D Levels

Try taking an outdoor stroll or roll during your lunch break (every day, if possible!) to grab some extra rays, or take advantage of sunny weekend days by getting outside for a hike, snowball fight, or just a hot cup of coffee. Aim for up to 30 minutes of ?sun time? each day during the winter months between the hours of 10am and 3pm. This should be enough exposure for most people to achieve healthy vitamin D production.

If sun is hard to come by in your region or if you have difficulty maneuvering out of doors, aim to get your vitamin D needs met through diet and supplements. Power foods for natural vitamin D include salmon, sardines, tuna, egg yolks, and beef liver. Vitamin D is also added to a wide variety of fortified foods, such as orange juice, dairy products, and grains. Check a product?s label to find out if it has added vitamin D.

For those who don?t like the sun or don?t get much in the way of fortified foods, over-the-counter vitamin D supplements are also available (even in fruity gummy form!). Always consult your healthcare provider before beginning a supplement, especially if you are already taking other medications or supplements.

Regardless of the way you get your appropriate levels of vitamin D?or the impact it may or may not have on MS risk and symptoms?you can rest assured that you are providing your body with a necessary building block for health (and happiness!). Eat, play, and be merry!

Lovebird Productions: Lovely Wedding & Relationship Blog: Q & A ...

I absolutely love Q & A Thursday. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy showing weddings & lovely couples to you throughout the week but something about Thursday is honest. Today we are talking about trust in relationships.

To me, a lot of factors play in to whom you trust and why you trust them. When Rusty and I started dating, he was a complete stranger and while some would be weary of relationships with strangers I trusted him wholeheartedly. I am the type of person who puts their trust in anyone until you give me a reason not to. My trust with Rusty continued to grow. I know that he has the best intentions for our relationship and marriage in mind. We are honest with one another, very honest. We communicate openly with one another. We depend on each other.

In past dating relationships, trust did not always come easy.?I have made mistakes in relationships. I have not been confident in relationships. I have been just in a relationship to have a relationship.?I know this sounds clich? but when you find the one your heart desires, trust should be natural. I never have doubted Rusty.?Trust is a funny thing but we all deserve it. A few things to think about...

1. Confidence. I know that in relationships past I lacked confidence in myself and in the relationship. When that happens it is hard to put your trust in to someone else. You may not feel good enough to believe someone is being honest with you. You may feel insecure about your relationship and the direction it is headed. If that is the case, talk to your significant other. You are a special lady and until you realize that, being with someone else may not be the right decision. Remember, it is okay to take time to focus on you and you alone.

2. The right relationship. Oh, the right relationship. Ladies, be honest with yourself. Only you can know if you are in the right relationship. The right relationship looks different for everyone but no matter the differences they all should have trust. Never comprise.

3. Life happens. No matter what relationship, whether dating or friendship, life brings bumps in the road. As a couple how you handle those trials builds trust and character. You should never start a relationship with someone you do not trust. Building your life and giving away your heart should go to a person you can depend on 100% and know your heart is safe with them.

4. You always have to trust and be honest. This is so important. You have to trust the one you are with. If you cannot because of events past or things you have done, get out of the relationship. That may sound harsh but living your life not knowing if you can trust your boyfriend is not worth it and stressful. Trust is such a beautiful and healthy thing. I dated someone for three years throughout college and that relationship was extremely dysfunctional. I really thought about where the relationship was headed. I didn't trust him and after I realized that things ended quickly. I also knew there was no bouncing back with him or regaining of trust. When I met Rusty it was so natural and easy. I can remember thinking this is how it should be. Trust shouldn't be difficult and if it is say for your lack of confidence in yourself or things that have broken you down in the past, maybe a relationship is just not the right thing for you at the moment. Being single is okay, very much okay.

5. Trust yourself. Always remember this. Trust yourself. Trust your gut. Trust your heart and know that things work out the way they should....every time. We will never understand all the things that happen in our life but one thing you can always rely on is trusting your instincts.

With all this being said, you need to know what you stand for in a relationship. Trust should be simple and easy with whom you love. Believe in yourself and your relationship. Just a little food for thought.

Hands-on with the ZTE Grand S LTE

ZTE Grand S LTE

Android Central @ CES

ZTE just made its latest flagship Grand S LTE official here at CES 2013, and we've got our hands on it. This is definitely the top of the line model for ZTE right now, joining in on the 1080P display game. As for the specs, they're all top of the line as well. We're looking at a 5-inch 1080x1920 display, a 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage (SDcard expandable,) 13MP / 2MP cameras, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and support for both DLNA streaming and MHL displays. This thing certainly checks all the boxes.

The external hardware is pretty high quality, with a nice unibody plastic construction that covers the entire back all the way up to the screen bezels. The 13MP camera is set in a piano black finished area that's slightly raised from the rest of the back plate. At just 6.9mm thick the Grand S LTE feels paper thin, but the curves around the sides make it still comfortable to hold. There are capacitive buttons -- back, home, menu -- on the bottom bezel, but they don't seem to light up very brightly. The display is quite nice, but it's really hard to judge in terrible trade show lighting conditions.

The one potential complaint after spending some time with it is that some of the devices were very glossy, which may turn some people away. Thankfully some of the other colors had more of a matte finish to them. Speaking of colors, ZTE has gone all-out with the selection here. From our count, there's light pink, dark pink (nearly red,) mint green, light grey, bright yellow, black and white colors of the Grand S LTE available.

Stick around after the break for a quick run-through of the software, as well as many pictures and hands-on video of the device from the show floor.

Mass. women at trial: Pregnancy drug caused cancer

BOSTON (AP) -- Eli Lilly and Co. failed to test a drug's effect on fetuses before promoting it as a way to prevent miscarriages, a lawyer charged Tuesday in opening statements in a trial over whether four sisters' breast cancer was caused by medication their mother took during pregnancy in the 1950s.

A lawyer for Eli Lilly told the jury there is no evidence the synthetic estrogen known as DES causes breast cancer in the daughters of women who took it. In addition, no medical records show the mother of the four women in the Boston case took DES, he said, or that if she did take it, that it was made by Eli Lilly. DES was not patented and was made by many companies at the time.

The sisters' case is the first to go to trial out of scores of similar claims filed in Boston and around the country. They are seeking unspecified damages. A total of 51 women have DES lawsuits pending in U.S. District Court in Boston against more than a dozen companies that made or marketed the drug.

DES, or diethylstilbestrol, was prescribed to millions of pregnant women over three decades to prevent miscarriages, premature births and other problems. It was taken off the market in the early 1970s after it was linked to a rare vaginal cancer in women whose mothers used DES.

Studies later showed the drug did not prevent miscarriages.

The Melnick sisters, who grew up in Tresckow, Pa., say they all developed breast cancer in their 40s after their mother took DES while pregnant.

Their lawyer, Aaron Levine, told the jury that their mother did not take DES while pregnant with a fifth sister, and that sister has not developed breast cancer.

"What are the odds of that happening in nature, if DES wasn't the culprit?" Levine said.

Levine said Eli Lilly urged doctors to prescribe DES without proof that it was safe or that it prevented miscarriages and other reproductive problems.

"You don't expose people to a risk unless there's a benefit, and there was no benefit," Levine said.

The companies that make DES argue that no firm link has been established between breast cancer and the drug.

James Dillon, a lawyer for Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly, told the jury that the doctor who treated the Melnick sisters' mother is now dead, and there are no records of him prescribing DES. Dillon said Eli Lilly at the time recommended DES for women who had had three or more consecutive miscarriages. Mrs. Melnick, he said, did not have consecutive miscarriages, so prescribing it to her would have gone against the company's recommendations.

Dillon said leading researchers at the time recommended that DES be used for pregnant women.

"In the 1950s, no one thought this drug was unsafe," he said.

Dillon told the jury that while it is "terribly unfair" that the four sisters got breast cancer, it is a common disease and doctors still don't understand what causes it. He said it "wouldn't be unreasonable" for jurors to have sympathy and empathy for the sisters, but asked them to keep their minds "open to the facts."

All four Melnick sisters had miscarriages, fertility problems or other reproductive tract problems long suspected of being caused by prenatal exposure to DES. They were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1997 and 2003 and had treatments ranging from lump-removal surgery to a full mastectomy, radiation and chemotherapy.

Thousands of lawsuits have been filed alleging links between DES and vaginal and cervical cancer, as well as fertility problems. Many of those cases were settled.
