Lady Gaga Under Fire After ?PopStarsDontEat? Comment
What was clearly intended as a jokey tweet lamenting the rigorous diet and exercise routine she is currently undertaking to prepare for her 110-date Born This Way Ball has put Lady Gaga in the crosshairs of some angry fans and eating-disorder organizations. On Tuesday, the pop star tweeted, ?Just killed back to back spin classes. Eating a salad dreaming of a cheeseburger #PopSingersDontEat #IWasBornThisWay.? Some fans thought the tweet wasn?t exactly keeping with the pop star?s ?You?re perfect the way you are? message and that her choice of the ?#PopStarsDontEat? hashtag could be misinterpreted as encouraging eating disorders because she posits herself as a role model to her fans.
The National Eating Disorder Association even weighed in, hitting its own Twitter account to write, ?Huh? This is the same person who recently implored girls to stop dieting??
MTV Buzzworthy has an Open Letter To Lady Gaga While it seems clear that Gaga was joking ? who hasn?t dove into a salad wishing it was something else? ? the comment does appear out of character for the star, who has spoken publicly about her own struggles with an eating disorder as a teen. Never let a white belt get dingy or dirty. The belt needs to be tied firmly above the hip bones. Make sure it is loose enough to move during your activities but tight enough to stay in place. The ends of the belt hanging on both sides need to be even. This can take time to learn so practice finding the amount of material needed to tie it. Some people place a small market on the inside of the belt to find the location easily. The belt should never be allowed to cross itself in the back. Never let your belt touch the floor.
Having the proper respect for the Martial Arts includes honoring the belt color system. Never wear a belt for a level of skill you have not accomplished. This is considered to be dishonorable. Dos Santos reigns supreme, dominates Mir at UFC 146
Junior dos Santos continues to make Ultimate Fighting Championship?s heavyweight division his personal playground.
The reigning UFC champion looked as untouchable as ever on Saturday night, dominating future UFC Hall-of-Famer Frank Mir at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Dos Santos nearly finished the two-time champion in the first round and wasted little time in the second getting the job done, earning a TKO victory at 3:04 of Round 2 in the main event of UFC 146.
?I?m feeling awesome, man. Awesome. It?s amazing. Not bad for a nice guy,? said dos Santos (15-1), recognized universally as perhaps the classiest fighter in UFC, which was why his pre-fight comments questioning the heart of Mir garnered so much attention.
Neither did much damage in the first round until the final 20 seconds, when dos Santos landed a right hand to the temple and threw a flurry of fists that nearly finished Mir. The former champ was wobbled and swung at the air at one point, barely surviving until the horn.
?This guy can take a punch. My hand is hurt,? said dos Santos, who improved to a perfect 9-0 since joining UFC in 2008.
Though Mir made it through the first five minutes, he didn?t last much longer. The end came when dos Santos landed a straight right hand that sent Mir crashing to the mat. Not wanting to follow Mir to the ground, where Mir?s strong submission skills could be used, dos Santos backed away and insisted Mir stand up. When Mir wobbled and was unable to get to his feet, referee Herb Dean called a stop to the match.
?He?s the champ. He?s fast. I couldn?t get out of the way. He hit me hard. Too many of them and they were all hard shots,? said Mir (16-6).
?Eventually they built up and I couldn?t do nothing about it ? He?s a very dangerous guy.?
Saturday?s main event pitted the hardest-hitting heavyweight ? dos Santos ? against perhaps the greatest submission heavyweight in the sport?s history ? Mir. Dos Santos has now claimed 11 of his 15 victories by knockout, including his win over Cain Velasquez last November to become champion. Mir, meanwhile, has a UFC record-tying eight submission victories to his credit, the last coming in December when he broke the arm of legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the idol and mentor of dos Santos.
Mir said he knew dos Santos would be difficult to get to the mat using wrestling takedowns, so he tried a foot lock early in an attempt to force a scramble. When that didn?t work, Mir had to play dos Santos?s game.
?I didn?t want a boxing match with him. He just forced me into it. I couldn?t get him down,? conceded Mir, who was attempting to join Randy Couture as the only three-time UFC heavyweight champions.
He won his first belt in 2004, snapping the arm of Tim Sylvia, and then claimed the interim title in 2008, beating Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
In the rematch against Nogueira last December at UFC 140 in Toronto, Mir snapped the arm of the legendary Brazilian ? and idol of dos Santos. The champion insisted before and after Saturday?s contest that he wasn?t entering UFC 146 seeking revenge for his fallen friend.
?That fight is between them. I don?t care about that,? said dos Santos.
?Of course, I respect so much my mentor. But I came here to defend my belt and I did it.?
In other pay-per-view matches at UFC 146:
* Cain Velasquez wanted to make a statement as he returned for the first time since losing the UFC heavyweight title to Junior dos Santos last November. You can bet the division heard him loud and clear.
In one of the bloodiest matches in UFC history, Velasquez (10-1) beat and battered Antonio Silva (16-4) in the co-main event of the evening. Velasquez left the cage without a scratch on him, while Silva left vials of his blood on the mat. Velasquez took Silva to the mat mere seconds into the first round, busted him open with a left elbow over the right eye and never let up until the match was mercifully ended 3:36 into the first round.
After struggling with a shoulder and knee injury over the past two years, Velasquez says he?s healthy and anxious to once again show what he?s capable of.
?I feel good,? said Velasquez. ?It?s definitely a step in the right direction.?
* Roy Nelson (18-7) showed the one-punch knockout power he?s known for, landing an overhand right that spun Dave Herman (21-4) to the mat before the contest was stopped 51 seconds into the first round.
?My plan was to wrestle. My coaches had a different game plan, which was, ?Hit him in the face.? Guess it worked,? said Nelson, tongue firmly planted in cheek, as always. ?Now I'm going to Carl's Jr. and getting a western bacon cheeseburger.?
* Stipe Miocic (9-0) used his superior wrestling to set up the finish over Shane Del Rosario (11-1), busting up Del Rosario with an array of short elbows before the match was stopped at 3:14 of the second round.
* The match between submission expert Stefan Struve (28-5) and knockout artist Lavar Johnson (17-6) figured to end quickly, one way or the other. It was Struve who got the match into his wheelhouse, taking the bout to the mat and locking in an armbar that forced Johnson to tap at 1:05 of the first round in their pay-per-view opener.
?Everyone kept telling me I was going to get knocked out. I didn't want to give him a chance to do what he does best,? said Struve. ?The way he was holding me, I felt like I could get the armbar so I went for it.?
All five pay-per-view matches were contested in the heavyweight division, the first time UFC has promoted such a card.
In preliminary matches at UFC 146:
* Darren Elkins (15-2) overcame a slow start in the first round and earned a hard-fought unanimous decision over Diego Brandao (19-8) in a featherweight match. All three judges scored the bout 29-28.
?I got more of a confidence when I saw I could strike with him. I felt him gassing and my plan coming into this was to let him throw in the first round and slow it down in the second and third,? said Elkins.
* Jamie Varner (19-6-1, 2 NC), after 18 months in the sport?s minor leagues (including one retirement), took the fight on short notice and still defeated Brazilian Edson Barboza (10-1) with a first round TKO stoppage at 3:23.
"Hitting rock bottom definitely lit a fire in me. I was burnt out on fighting but I figured Michael Jordan retired a few times,? said Varner.
?I'm finding my way back and I'm happy to be here. It's surreal.?
* C.B. Dolloway (12-5-0) controlled Jason Miller (24-9-0) on the ground and earned a 29-28, 30-26, 29-28 unanimous decision victory.
?I knew I had to get in and get the takedown. I got caught a couple of times but I've been hit and hurt before,? said Dolloway. ?You have to find a way to recover and get the win and I was able to."
* Dan Hardy (23-10-0, 1 NC) ended a four-fight losing streak in fine fashion, knocking out Duane Ludwig (29-12-0) 3:51 into round one.
"It felt great out there. You can put all the work in and if it goes wrong for 15 minutes then none of it matters. I've had a bad run. I took some time off and then I changed everything - new team, new training,? said Hardy.
?When you connect with the right shot you know it?s over. I put my arms up in celebration a little prematurely but when he looked back up I wasn't going to let it slip away so I went in and got the finish.?
* Paul Sass (13-0) submitted Jacob Volkmann (14-3) 1:54 into their welterweight match.
"This is my biggest victory by far. I never get nervous for fights but today fighting in Las Vegas in the fight capital of the world at the MGM Grand I was definitely nervous,? said Sass.
* Making his highly-anticipated debut, Glover Teixeira (18-2) submitted Kyle Kingsbury (11-4, 1 NC) just 1:53 into their light heavyweight contest.
"A debut in the UFC feels like my debut in MMA. It was that exciting to me,? said Teixeira.
?I wanted (UFC president Dana White) to remember my fight, and me."
* Former World Extreme Cagefighting champion Mike Brown (26-8) earned a unanimous decision over Daniel Pineda (17-8) in a featherweight bout. All three judges scored the match 29-28.
"I feel good the job is done. There was nothing fancy out there but it?s another paycheck and another (win),? said Brown.

Earlier this week we saw video of Madonna?s tour stage for the MDNA World Tour being erected in Tel Aviv, Israel, where her tour will have its world premiere. Today we get to see photos of Madonna and her crew (including toyboy Brahim Zaibat and daughter Lourdes Maria) making their way thru JFK International Airport in NYC, NY as they make their way to Tel Aviv. Also featured below are a few spoilery photos from Madonna?s tour rehearsals that give us a glimpse of what?s in store when the tour kicks off next week. Proceed with caution if you wish to remain unspoiled and don?t want to see too much of Madonna?s MDNA World Tour.
Madonna and co. looked to be in mostly good spirits as they made their way thru the airport terminal. I?m sure they have some pretour jitters but I have no doubt that they are ready to put on one amazing show for the folks in Israel. I can?t even tell you how jealous I am of the Israelis right now. They get to see Madonna?s show in just a few days and I have to wait until OCTOBER! OY! Try as I might to remain unspoiled, I just can?t do it. I can?t wait that long to see what Madonna has in store with this new tour. And speaking of spoilers, here are a few newly released photos shot by Guy Oseary that were taken during the final tour rehearsals in NYC:
These photos don?t show too much but still ? they do give us an idea of how the show will turn out. Once Madonna hits the stage in Tel Aviv, we?re gonna be inundated with TONS of tour spoilers. If it weren't for Eugene J. Polley, flipping TV channels would be an exhausting and tedious undertaking. Polley, after all, invented the world's first wireless TV remote. He died of natural causes on Sunday, at the age of 96.
According to a press release put out by Zenith ??the company with which Polley started his 47-year engineering career in 1935 ??the innovator earned 18 U.S. patents for his inventions, which include the "Flash-matic" remote control.?This device, introduced in 1955, "used a flashlight-like device to activate photo cells on the television set to change channels."
Because the remote shined visible light, TVs could be confused by other light sources. In spite of its quirkiness, the Flash-matic was a revolution, and the reason?Polley was bestowed with humorous titles ranging from "the founding father of the couch potato" to "the czar of zapping" to "the beach boy of channel surfing."
The Flash-Matic was followed by the Space Command ??a "next-generation wireless TV remote based on ultrasonic technology" ??which was developed by the late Dr. Robert Adler, a fellow Zenith engineer who built upon Polley's invention. Of course, by the time the 1980s came around, ultrasonic remotes had given way to infrared (or IR) remotes. The most recent ones use radio frequency, so you don't have to point them directly at anything.
Wireless remote controls, which were a luxury in their early days, are now a standard accompaniment to any TV, set-top box, DVD player, DVR, stereo, and just about any other home entertainment device you might encounter. All because of the work tracing back to one Eugene J. Polley.
So pause for a moment the next time you sit on the couch, idly surfing channels on a TV that's 8 feet away, and think of the brilliant engineer who made your exquisite laziness possible.

FLINT, Mich. (AP) ? DNA evidence and the opinions of mental health experts are grounds for convicting an Israeli immigrant of murder, a prosecutor told jurors Tuesday in the first trial from a series of 2010 stabbings that began in Michigan and stretched to other states.
In closing arguments on the eighth day of trial, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton immediately highlighted the testimony of three experts who said Elias Abuelazam was not mentally ill at the time of the stabbings.
The stabbings, especially the death of Arnold Minor, were "planned, focused, done with care," Leyton told the jury.
Abuelazam, 35, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Minor, who was found crumpled on a Flint street after midnight in August 2010. Police consider him to be the last Michigan victim that summer when 14 people were stabbed in and around Flint, five fatally.
Minor's blood was found in Abuelazam's Chevy Blazer and on his clothes. Leyton noted the odds that the blood on the steering wheel belonged to someone else was "one in 397 quadrillion."
"I didn't know there was such a number," Leyton said.
Abuelazam's only defense has been his mental health. A psychiatrist who interviewed him in jail testified Abuelazam was paranoid schizophrenic and under the spell of violent delusions that compelled him to stab strangers between midnight and 6 a.m. and then speed away in his Blazer.
Defense attorney Ed Zeineh mostly skipped over the blood evidence in his closing remarks and emphasized mental illness. He said Abuelazam showed "psychotic behavior" years ago when he stabbed himself in the neck in 1997 and stabbed a friend in Israel in 2009.
"He would see things, he would hear things," Zeineh told the jury, referring to 2010. "Black clouds, voices in his head. These were consistent. He believed there were evil spirits taking over his body, possessing him."
The jury left court to start deliberations shortly before noon.
To find Abuelazam not guilty by reason of insanity, the jury would have to agree he didn't know his acts were wrong or that he couldn't adapt his behavior to the law. He would remain in custody, but be sent to a mental health hospital ? instead of prison ? for an indefinite amount of time.
Abuelazam also could be found guilty or even guilty but mentally ill, which still carries life in prison without parole.
There was no evidence Abuelazam was under a doctor's care in 2010 or that he was taking any medication for schizophrenia. He spent only a few months in Flint, living in a home owned by his uncle, and had a $10-an-hour job at a liquor store.
Besides Minor's death, Abuelazam is charged with murder in two other slayings in the Flint area and six cases of attempted murder. He's also charged with attempted murder in Toledo, Ohio, and suspected in attacks in Leesburg, Va., an area where he formerly lived.

Mandel, Renacci donations subject of federal probe
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Federal officials are investigating questionable campaign contributions to two Ohio officeholders, freshman Rep. James Renacci and state treasurer and Senate candidate Josh Mandel, spokesmen for both Republicans confirmed Monday.
Renacci spokesman Shawn Ryan said the U.S. Attorney's Office contacted the campaign four or five months ago with questions about donations from employees of Benjamin Suarez, a direct-marketing magnate, to either the congressman's campaign or Mandel's.
Renacci, seeking a second term representing Ohio's 16th Congressional District, is being challenged by Rep. Betty Sutton, a Democrat who was drawn out of her district. Mandel, elected treasurer in 2010, is challenging Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown.
The (Toledo) Blade had reported last August that Suarez and 16 employees and spouses from Canton-based Suarez Corporation Industries gave donations totaling $100,000 each to Renacci and Mandel.
Federal campaign finance law prohibits a donor from contributing in someone else's name. Corporations also are prohibited from awarding bonuses or other rewards to employees in exchange for campaign contributions. The company has said the employees gave freely and weren't compensated.
Ryan said the government sought records showing the dates of donations from Suarez employees.
"The attorney had apparently thought the donations had all been made together at the same time, which they hadn't," Ryan said in an email. "They came in over the course of a few months."
Renacci's campaign treasurer provided all the information to the attorney and that was the last time they spoke to him, Ryan said. He said any contributions would be returned immediately if they are determined to be improper.
"To our knowledge, no contributions made by any donor to our campaign were made improperly," Ryan said in the email. "However, if we find out that any contributions, either made in the past or in the future, were not made properly and in full accordance with the law, they will be returned immediately."
Mandel campaign spokesman Travis Considine also confirmed that donor information was sought.
"The campaign is aware of the investigation and is fully cooperating," he said. "Neither the campaign nor anyone associated with it is a target of the investigation."
Considine said the campaign was setting aside in a separate account the roughly $100,000 in donations from Suarez employees pending the outcome of the investigation. He the money may be returned or donated to charity.
Mike Tobin, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Cleveland said he could not confirm or deny an investigation.
A message left Monday with Suarez's attorney was not immediately returned.

In the Philippines, Catholic leader Archbishop Ramon Arguelles urged the public to boycott her two concerts. "Her fans are in danger of falling into the clutches of Satan," he told reporters.
Former Manila mayor Lito Atienza said he was not against Lady Gaga herself but only against "certain acts and passages" in her songs and music videos.
This included the use of a crucifix in "a very denigrating manner" as well as one of her songs "where she is belittling Jesus Christ himself and praising Judas as heroic", he told AFP.
"We respect freedom of expression in this country. We also appreciate art and culture... but the laws should be respected."
But officials in the Manila district of Pasay said the show would go on Monday night at the Arena, a new, oblong theatre built in Pasay by the country's richest man, Henry Sy of the SM shopping mall chain.
Outside the arena, about 100 "little monsters" -- the name given to Lady Gaga's devoted followers -- were lined up hours before the show, sporting her signature outrageous clothing, hairstyle and makeup.
One male fan in a blonde wig and high heels, identifying himself as "Lady Gagita", shrugged off the critics.
"Those who are rallying against her are hypocrites. They don't see how much inspiration Lady Gaga has given people," he said.
Local authorities in Pasay said they had worked out a deal to permit the show while addressing the clamour of Christian conservatives, including about 500 who held a rally near the Arena venue on Sunday.
Censors will be in the audience to monitor possible violations of a law against "immoral doctrines, obscene publications and exhibitions and indecent shows", said Glenn Agranzamendez, secretary to Pasay mayor Tony Calixto.
"He already formed two teams to monitor what will be shown at the concert and to file a report on the following day," Agranzamendez told AFP.
The mayor could cancel the Tuesday concert if the monitors find that Monday night's show "exhibited any lewd act or any act that would be offensive to religious belief".
"We will keep an open mind at the concert and we will be as objective as possible," the aide added.
Christian groups have vowed to send their own monitors and warned they could file a criminal case against Lady Gaga.
Under Philippine law, people found guilty of taking part in or sponsoring "indecent shows" can be jailed for up to six years.
Despite the protests, the demand for tickets has been so strong that the Manila concert's organisers had to extend the event from the original one-night show to two nights.
Similarly in Hong Kong, huge demand saw organisers extend Lady Gaga's original one-night run to four concerts.
But question marks remain over whether she will be able to perform to 50,000 fans in Jakarta on June 3. Promoters are trying to save the show despite police denying it a permit after Islamic hardliners threatened to unleash "chaos".

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Pinch-hitter Scott Van Slyke connected for his first major league homer, a go-ahead, three-run shot in the seventh inning against his father's former team, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night.
Kyle Lohse allowed three runs and 11 hits over 5 2-3 innings with four strikeouts and left with a 5-3 lead. But rookie Elian Herrera started the Dodgers' winning rally with a one-out single against Victor Marte, and Bobby Abreu greeted Mark Rzepczynski (0-2) with a single.
Van Slyke, whose father is former All-Star Andy Van Slyke, swung at a 3-0 pitch and drove it into the left field bullpen after Andre Ethier struck out.
