Where Should I Live in Retirement? - Top-Drawer Resources

Where one decides to live in retirement is, or should be, a very personal decision.? It?s easy to find hundreds of articles online about?wonderful places to live, but what really makes a place wonderful is that is suits the resident.? As Steve Vernon points out in his article How to Choose the Best Place to Retire, the ?right place? is where the resident feels at home.

Vernon?highights a number of factors to consider that he feels are more important than the typically sited criteria like weather, activities and cost of living.? Among his factors are proximity to family; the availability of full- or part-time work; one?s own housing budget; the availability of transportation and health care; and how well one fits in with the neighbors.? I agree with the points he?s made, and would add that these criteria are the same whether someone is moving into a single family home, a condominium or a retirement community.? There are always a couple?factors that matter more than others.? It?s important to never lose site of these during the exploration and decision making phases.?

Yesterday, I was?talking with a family whose mother is considering a very upscale continuing care retirement community.? The daughter-in-law is worried that it won?t be a good fit.? Just like prospective college students often?spend the night on campus, prospective retirement community residents can benefit greatly by spending time on ?campus? to test out how?well they fit in and to experience what really goes on when the sales folks aren?t around.? I always encourage people to talk with residents; eat in the dining rooms and listen to the conversations going on around them; spend a few days on campus, if possible.? Don?t be afraid to ask residents what they like and don?t like about the community.? Most are happy to share their experiences.? In the end, only the person making the move should determine what is a good fit?..or not.

Top-Drawer Resources works with seniors who are considering a new independent living situation in the Baltimore County/City area.?For more information, click here.

?Get a Hustle On?It?s Leap Year?

In researching the tradition of leap year marriage proposals, Parkin discovered a vast quantity of cartoonish postcards depicting proposing women as fugly harridans. Postcards? purpose in early-20th-century America fell somewhere between that of text messages and that of image macros?a way to convey practical information and share jokes back when mail was delivered twice a day. One of the most popular leap-year memes depicted proposing women as fat, unattractive, and domineering?sometimes even violent?and the men they proposed to as scrawny, weak, and emasculated. ?For example, one of the postcards shows a tiny man squeaking ?I surrender? as two gargantuan women, brandishing a total of four deadly weapons, pin him against the wall.

Vegan Junk Food

The Vegan diet has become increasingly popular over the past few years.? When I say popular I mean about one in every third person is converting over to the non-dairy and non-animal product diet.? Dating back to the 1940?s, veganism is not a new concept but seems new when you are trying to imagine recipes without many of the common food resources we use today.? I have talked to numerous people interested in transitioning into the vegan diet but are afraid of what they will miss and what they will not have access to during the diet change.? This is the major reason I welcomed the opportunity to review Vegan Junk Food by Lane Gold.

Curious to see if I could even mentally convert for a few hours, I discovered a whole new world.? The Vegan lifestyle is not as scary as it may seem to those who often retort with the ?I can?t go that far? or ?I won?t be able to eat anything?.? Vegan Junk Food features recipes for Loaded Nachos, Spinach Artichoke Dip, Meatball Pizza with Peppers and Onions, Mac and Cheese Bake, Meatball Sandwiches, White Raspberry Cheesecake and the list goes on and on.? Honestly, this cookbook has better recipes then some of the cookbooks loaded with dairy and other animal products.

The cookbook took the right approach by presenting over 225 junk foods in vegan form that would lure even the most carnivorous eater to never touch another animal product.? The recipes are intriguing because they feature all the goodness that you are used to with the animal products but you are totally substituting.? Thinking about converting? You might want to start here.

Former coach of fallen Roanoke soldier speaks with WDBJ7

Roanoke, Va. -?

Two American soldiers were killed in the recent protests in Afghanistan, that began after news broke that copies of the Quran had been burned by theU.S. military at a base. One of those killed was Roanoke native, Corporal TJ Conrad.

His former wrestling coach sat down and told us more about him.

So much to offer life and the people around him, Corporal TJ Conrad was killed Thursday by an Afghan soldier amid anti-American sentiment over accidental Quran burnings at a US military base.

"You never want to see anything bad happen to anyone, and especially something so tragic to someone that was so loving and so caring of other people," said Dave Spangler, Conrad's former wrestling coach. Spangler coached Conrad when he was in middle school. He kept in touch with him throughout his life.

"He was just a loving kid and I've actually watched him have a very tough match, lose, and he would be the first person to congratulate the person he lost to," Spangler explained. "He loved people and he truly loved being around people and he showed it in every way possible."

He especially loved his wife, Holly, and his 7-month-old son, Bentley. His parents still live in Roanoke and TJ also had lots of friends here.

"He's left a big hold in a lot of our lives," said Spangler. "They're not sure how to understand it and take it all."

Outgoing and fun, TJ was also a hard-worker who always lifted up others around him. It's something Spangler is sure he carried onto the battlefield in Afghanistan up to the end. "I'm sure he's left good friends there, as well as here at home. And I'm sure they'd all say the same things I'm saying."

A 22-year-old man who will forever be remembered as a hero, who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Conrad's family traveled to Dover, Deleware Saturday to receive his body at the Air Force Base there. The Department of Defense says Conrad has been promoted posthumously to Sergeant.

Free to tax but not so to choose finance source | the Hack Line

Georgia Senator Buddy Carter has got the right idea when it comes to being able to finance how one can install solar panels. Why would we not want to make it easier to have the ability to get to such energy in Georgia? The answer is Southern Company and their bottomless pockets.

Carter is working to let the consumer use third-party financing known as a power-purchase agreement (PPA). It?s where consumers make monthly payments to the company that financed the installation based on the amount of electricity that is generated. This type of arrangement is viable in 45 other states but it seems Southern Company (aka Georgia Power) doesn?t want it here. Deep pockets have influence. (Atlanta Business Chronicle article?and Savannah Morning News?.)

Those at the capital have some difficulty in letting the public have a choice in this matter and the amendment is stalled in the Senate Regulated Industries & Utilities Committee.

In July we will vote on the Transportation Investment Act 2012 (aka TSPLOST) to increase our sales taxes because those same Republicans being swayed by Southern Company?s deep pockets did not have the ability to vote in a massive tax increase. They pass the buck on tax increases because the public knows best but they will not give us a choice on how to finance solar panels?

It is hoped those on the Senate Regulated Industries & Utilities Committee can give the consumer in Georgia an alternative means to how they finance solar energy and not rely so much on the teat of Southern Company.

Take time today and let the committee know where you stand on the issue of choice.

Moon may contain magma, say scientists (+video)

Although the Earth's crust is still shifting, driven by the churning semimolten rock underneath it, researchers had thought the moon had cooled off much too long ago to still have any such tectonic activity.

The moon's crust was apparently active far more recently than previously believed, scientists say.

These new findings raise questions about?how the moon formed?and evolved, researchers said.

Although the Earth's crust is still shifting, driven by the churning semimolten rock underneath it, researchers had thought the moon had cooled off much too long ago to still have any such tectonic activity. For instance, the youngest known tectonic features on the lunar landscape until now ? small cliffs in the lunar highlands resulting from wrinkling of the surface as the moon's interior cooled and shrunk ? are thought to be less than 1 billion years old, although by how much is uncertain.

Now, images collected by the?Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter?hints the moon has probably seen tectonic activity within the last 50 million years.

In these photos, researchers spotted a dozen or so narrow, trenchlike features known as graben in the lunar highlands and in the dark plains of volcanic rock known as the mare basalts. Graben are essentially troughs with two faults or cracks in the surface on either side of them. They are thought to have formed as the lunar crust was stretched.?[10 Coolest Moon Discoveries]

"Overall on the moon, you have this contracting, shrinking environment, but in some places, apparently there's this stretching extension of the crust," said study lead author Thomas Watters, a planetary scientist at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

The graben the scientists detected, which reach up to about 1,640 feet (500 meters) wide and 1.1 miles (1.8 kilometers) long, appear relatively pristine. This suggests they formed recently ? otherwise, they would be marred more often by craters from meteor impacts over time.

"We think they're less than 50 million years old, but they could be 10 million years old, could be 1 million years old, could have happened 40 years ago," Watters told SPACE.com. "The intriguing picture that's emerging of the moon is that there is recent geological activity going on."

Moonquakes?detected by seismic sensors installed during the Apollo missions support the notion of recent activity on the moon, researchers added. All in all, the moon's interior may still be hot.

"The moon may not only have been tectonically active recently, but may still be tectonically active today," Watters said.

Models of how the moon cooled over time suggest it was totally molten after its formation, and that it should now be contracting as it cools, forcing the surface to wrinkle. However, if this was true, such compression would have suppressed the creation of graben ? these ditches typically form when the crust stretches, not crinkles.

Instead, these findings suggest the moon was not completely molten after it was formed. If this were the case, the moon would not contract strongly enough to suppress the emergence of graben.

"Currently, a popular idea for how the moon formed is that it was completely molten in the beginning? after a?Mars-size object hit Earth?very early in its history, the debris cloud from the surviving material formed the moon," Watters said. "This may lend support to alternative scenarios that the moon was not completely molten when it formed, that only part of it was, forming a magma ocean."

Future research can look for more graben in Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter photos once the satellite finishes imaging the moon, Watters said. He and his colleagues detailed their findings online Feb. 19 in the journal Nature Geoscience.

(AP) ? Israel's Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing this week on the appeal of a Palestinian prisoner waging an unprecedented hunger strike that has stretched for more than two months, court officials and his lawyers said Monday.

Khader Adnan, a member of the Islamic Jihad militant group, is demanding he be released immediately. He has not been charged with a crime and does not know what he is suspected of doing.

The case of the 33-year-old Adnan has attracted widespread attention among Palestinians, with large crowds holding regular protests in his support.

The life-threatening gamble has also drawn broader attention toward Israel's policy of "administrative detention," under which Palestinians can be held without charge for months, and even years, at a time.

Both the European Union and the United Nations have said they are following the case closely and urged Israel to give Adnan an open trial.

Adnan was arrested on Dec. 17 and later sentenced to four months of administrative detention. He launched the strike a day after his arrest, protesting his administrative detention and claiming he was beaten and humiliated in captivity.

Israel has defended its policy as a way to address imminent security threats. It says that releasing evidence against suspects would endanger its network of informants.

Capt. Eytan Buchman, an Israeli military spokesman, says Adnan is suspected of acts that "threaten regional security." He would not elaborate.

A military court already rejected an appeal by Adnan on Feb. 13. The Supreme Court will hear his appeal on Thursday, court officials said, though it remains unclear when it will announce its ruling.

Adnan's lawyers said that after 65 days without food, his condition is so poor that they are not sure he will make it past the hearing.

He is losing his hair, his muscles have atrophied and he can only speak in whispers, said Yael Moram, a spokeswoman for Israel's Physicians for Human Rights, which has been monitoring his condition.

Adnan is being held under guard in a hospital in northern Israel. He has been taking liquids infused with electrolytes to keep alive.

In a separate development Monday, Israeli police said vandals sprayed anti-Christian graffiti on a Baptist church in Jerusalem.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the words "price tag" were also scrawled on the church property. It is a reference to a practice of Jewish extremists who lash out against the Israeli government for actions against settlers.

Such attacks usually target Muslim and Palestinian sites in the West Bank, but the vandals have recently spread their activities to target Muslim and Christian minorities in Israel.

Rosenfeld said police were searching for the suspects.

Abortion, birth control grab political spotlight (AP)

DAYTON, Ohio ? Political turmoil over abortion and birth control spread suddenly on Tuesday. A high-ranking official resigned from the Komen breast-cancer charity after its backtracking treaty with Planned Parenthood, and Republican presidential candidates blistered the Obama administration for a recent ruling on Catholic hospitals and contraception.

The White House made a point of declaring it wanted to ease the concerns of church-affiliated employers ? many would be required to provide birth control coverage to their workers under the new rules ? but there was no word on how those concerns might be addressed.

The two-track drama pumped new furor into longstanding disputes that sometimes take a backseat in political campaigns because the lines are so familiar and firmly drawn. Last week's Komen-Planned Parenthood dispute stirred many women's groups that support legal abortion. And the Obama ruling touched a nerve with moderate Roman Catholics who support contraceptives but also defend their church's right to run its hospitals and other institutions according to religious convictions.

Republican presidential candidates pounced on what they considered a blunder by President Barack Obama. They believe his administration's ruling will alienate moderate Catholic voters who could prove crucial in November in Ohio, Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

There also could be political repercussions from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure controversy. The breast-cancer charity, facing fierce criticism, mostly from women's groups, quickly overturned its decision to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a major provider of abortions, but it also screens women for breast cancer and other health problems.

In Atlanta, Karen Handel, a Komen vice president who played a role in the fund cutoff decision, resigned Tuesday. A Republican who ran for governor in Georgia, Handel was seen by some as an example of what they felt was an increasing tendency by Komen to bring partisan politics into the charity's decisions.

"I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale and my involvement in it," Handel said in her resignation letter.

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, for his part, said he supported Komen's original decision to stop funding Planned Parenthood.

The arguments came as the GOP presidential hopefuls campaigned in several states and Republicans voted in Colorado and Minnesota. Each candidate tried to take advantage of the unusually intense focus on reproductive issues.

Romney, a Mormon, decried Obama's "assault on religion," telling Colorado voters the new contraception ruling was "a real blow ... to our friends in the Catholic faith."

Newt Gingrich, a Catholic, told Ohio Republicans, "There has been a lot of talk about the Obama administration's attack on the Catholic Church."

But Gingrich, who is struggling to narrow Romney's lead in the GOP nomination race, also turned his fire on the former Massachusetts governor. "Governor Romney insisted that Catholic hospitals give out abortion pills, against their religious belief, when he was governor," Gingrich said.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum, also a strong anti-abortion advocate and a Catholic, made similar remarks about Romney in a written article Tuesday.

As governor, Romney enforced a law that required all Massachusetts hospitals, including Catholic ones, to provide emergency contraception to rape victims. Some Catholics say the so-called morning-after pill is a form of abortion. Romney said he did not support the law, which passed despite his veto. But he also said at the time, "My personal view, in my heart of hearts, is that people who are subject to rape should have the option of having emergency contraception or emergency contraception information."

Romney may have given Gingrich and Santorum a new opening Tuesday when he likened "morning-after pills" to "abortive pills." Romney supported legalized abortion when he ran for Senate and governor in Massachusetts, but he now opposes it.

The White House and Obama's re-election campaign endured another day of sharp debate over the contraception ruling, which falls under preventive-health measures attached to the 2010 health care overhaul. Church-affiliated employers' health insurance plans will have to cover birth control, regardless of the institutions' religious principles. Churches are not covered by the rule, but affiliated employers such as colleges and hospitals are.

The ruling follows the Institute of Medicine's recommendation to treat birth control as preventive health because it promotes maternal and child health by allowing women to space their pregnancies. For religious-affiliated employers, the requirement will take effect in mid-2013.

Workplace health plans will have to cover all forms of contraception approved by the Food and Drug Administration, including the birth control pill, implantable devices, sterilization and the morning-after pill. There is no mandate to cover abortions.

Last Sunday, Catholic bishops in more than 140 dioceses issued denunciations of the decision that were read at weekend Masses.

Sister Carol Keehan, head of the Catholic Health Association ? which supported Obama's 2010 health care law ? summed up the feeling of some moderate Catholics who say political analysts are missing the point.

"It's not the issue of contraception but religious freedom," she said. "It's not about preventing women from buying anything themselves, but telling the church what it has to buy, and the potential for that to go further."

Wall Street Journal editorial writer Peggy Noonan said the contraception ruling might cost Obama the election.

But Jen Psaki, a former Obama aide, said millions of American women, including Catholics, see it differently.

"This is about one issue, and that is making sure all women, especially those who can't afford it, have access to health care," said Psaki, who is Catholic. "And if Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich continue to make a political issue out of such an important human right, they risk jumping the shark with women voters of all political stripes."

Groups on the left and right raced into the debate.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said he hopes the Obama administration "backs down on this rule that violates conscience. If not, we'll do everything in our power to repeal it."

NARAL Pro-Choice America defended the new ruling.

"This is one of the biggest victories for women's health in a generation," said Nancy Keenan, its president. "Nurses, janitorial staff and professors who work at colleges and universities that do not currently cover birth control will get access to contraception."

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney didn't say how employers' concerns might be addressed, though he said there were a lot of ideas for doing it.

He said Obama's focus is making sure that women employed by Catholic-affiliated employers like hospitals, colleges or charities are able to get contraception. At the same time, Carney said Obama wants to respect religious beliefs and convictions.

David Axelrod, a top political aide to Obama, hinted at possible adjustments to the rule or its application. He told MSNBC the administration didn't intend to "abridge anyone's religious freedom."

"This is an important issue," Axelrod said. "It's important for millions of women around the country. We want to resolve it in an appropriate way, and we're going to do that."

Santorum suggested this week that efforts to reach an accord won't be easy.

"The Catholic Church has been arguing and negotiating this for a year, and the administration is saying `it's just a misunderstanding,'" Santorum said while campaigning in Colorado. "It's just a bunch of bull. They are folks who are trying to use their power to force people to do things that they believe they should do and are right. They don't care about their religion."

Speaking at a 2006 Call to Renewal conference, organized by the religious anti-poverty group Sojourners, Obama said secular Americans were wrong to ask churchgoers to "leave their religion at the door before entering the public square."

But Obama also said religious groups must be recognize "ground rules for collaboration" and the importance of the separation of church and state.

What the journey of a handful of dust tells us about our fragile planet

BLOWING IN THE WIND: A plume of Saharan dust extends westward to the Canary Islands. Image: Courtesy of Jacques Descloitres rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/Modis Land Rapid Response Team, NASA GSFC

    In Brief

    • Although scientists have devoted much study to pollution, for many years they neglected the interrelatedness of natural dust and the atmosphere. Recently they have come to appreciate how dust influences climate and cloud formation?and the fertilization of oceans and rain forests.
    • Despite much research, the effect of dust on the atmosphere is complex and poorly understood. Even the best supercomputers running the most sophisticated models do not provide a good picture.

The Bodele depression at the southern edge of the Sahara is a fearsome, forsaken place. Winds howl through the nearby Tebesti Mountains and Ennedi Plateau, picking up speed as they funnel into a parched wasteland nearly the size of California. Once there was a massive freshwater lake here. Now the lake is a shrunken puddle of its former self. Across most of the landscape, there is nothing.

'Artist' dog has mysterious shaking sickness

    Uggie at the Golden Globes

By Erin Carlson, The Hollywood Reporter

Uggie, who's soared to fame as Jean Dujardin's canine co-star in the Oscar-nominated film "The Artist," might soon go into retirement for an unknown illness.

? 'The Artist' dog star Uggie has been rehearsing an Oscar skit with host Billy Crystal (Exclusive)

The Jack Russell's trainer, Omar Von Muller, was quoted as telling the British newspaper The Daily Mail that he suffers from a "mysterious shaking syndrome. It is a neurological disorder and we've spent thousands on vets' bills trying to figure out what is causing it but the experts don't really know."

'The Artist' dog star Uggie retiring from films, brother Dash ready to jump in

Calling the situation "very sad," Muller said Uggie's problems started prior to November 2010, when production began on "The Artist," for which Uggie is nominated for one of two Golden Collar awards in addition to his performance opposite Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson in "Water for Elephants."

"It comes and goes and, ironically, it is worse when he's relaxed. When we were filming you could hardly notice it," said Muller, adding: "It is a shame this has happened when he is getting the biggest success of his career but we feel the best thing to do is to retire him after the Oscars."

In a recent interview with THR, Muller's co-trainer Sarah Clifford said Uggie, who's 10 years old, would retire from his feature film career this year after working 15-hour days on set, most recently for "The Artist."

"We don?t force our dogs to do this," she said "And it always has to be fun for them. Uggie's still enjoying it but he?s getting up there and he?s slowing down a little."

For his purportedly final hurrah, Uggie -- whose brother, Dash, is expected to step in his paws --? will open the Oscars telecast on Feb. 26 alongside host Billy Crystal, according to reports.

Thousands brave icy chill to protest in Moscow

Tens of thousands of Russians defied bitter cold in Moscow on Saturday to demand fair elections in a march against Vladimir Putin's 12-year rule, and supporters of the prime minister staged a rival rally drawing comparable numbers.

Opposition protesters also organized smaller protests in other cities across the vast country, trying to maintain pressure on Putin one month before a March 4 presidential election he is expected to win.

Their breath turning to white vapor clouds in the frigid Moscow air, tens of thousands of protesters marched within sight of the red-brick Kremlin walls and towers, chanting "Russia without Putin!" and "Give us back the elections!"

Russia Today reported that organizers were expecting about 50,000 people to take part in the event, which it summed up with the headline "Frozen fury."

It said there were due to be rallies at Bolotnaya Square and Pushkinskaya Square.

Putin was president from 2000 until 2008, when he ushered Dmitry Medevedev into the Kremlin because of a constitutional ban on three successive terms as head of state. Putin became prime minister but remained the dominant leader.

On Saturday, Putin was 900 miles from Moscow, promising angry residents of the Ural Mountains town of Roza the state would move 3,800 people from homes threatened by shifting ground on the edge of the biggest open-pit coal mine in Eurasia.

"You see what we are doing, we are dealing with concrete problems of the people who live here," Putin said when asked about the demonstrations.

Anti-Putin protesters cope with bitter cold and big questions

Temperatures far below freezing tested the power and perseverance of a street protest movement fuelled by suspicions of fraud in a December parliamentary election and dismay among some Russians over Putin's plan to rule at least six more years.

In the capital, demonstrators bundled up against the cold marched down a broad central street, many wearing white ribbons that have become symbols of protests. A digital clock flashed the midday temperature: minus 17 C (1 F).

"Not one vote for Putin!" Vladimir Ryzhkov, an opposition leader, said to a roar of approval from the crowd at the rally that followed the march. Protesters packed a square across the river from the Kremlin, stamping and clapping to keep warm.

Opposition leaders are trying to maintain momentum after tens of thousands turned out on December 10 and December 24 for the biggest opposition protests since Putin was first elected president in 2000.

Polls indicate Putin is all but certain to win the presidency despite a decline from previous popularity levels, but opponents hope persistent protests will undermine his authority in a new six-year term and push him into concessions.

"We have already reached a point of no return. People have stopped being afraid and see how strong they are together," said Ivan Kositsky, 49. He said Putin "wants stability, but you can only find stability in the graveyard."

Kositsky wore an orange ribbon in a reference to the 2004 Orange Revolution in Ukraine, where peaceful protests following allegations of widespread election fraud helped usher an opposition candidate to the presidency.

Opposition leaders said up to 120,000 people joined their protest in Moscow, which appeared as large as the December rallies -- suggesting their fears a cold snap might keep people away were unfounded.

Many protesters had banners making light of the bone-chilling weather and calling for Putin to stand down:

"Down with the cold, down with Putin," one banner said. Others declared: "They froze our democracy" and "We are frozen in solidarity."

Europe tries to shield homeless in deep freeze

    For Putin
Police said 138,000 people attended the pro-Putin rally a few km (miles) away in Moscow, but reporters estimated the crowd was smaller than that, and attendance at demonstrations in support of the former KGB spy has previously been swelled by the authorities ferrying in sympathizers by bus.

Teachers have said they came under pressure from trade unions to attend the pro-Putin rally.

"Trade union representatives called us together and said at least five to 10 people from each school had to go (to the Putin rally)," said Sergei Bebchuk, a 54-year-old headteacher who ignored the request and attended the opposition protest.

"I have something I believe in. We could not go there," he said, his daughter at his side with white ribbons in her hair.

At the pro-Putin rally, demonstrators carried posters saying "For Putin" with a check mark in a box next to his face. Another read "Putin led Russia out of civil war" and one said, "My children will live in Russia - I need Putin."

In keeping with Putin's warnings against revolutionary change and the anti-Western rhetoric he has employed in his campaign, the rally was billed as "anti-orange" - another reference to Ukraine, where Moscow has said Western-funded activists helped bring a pro-Western leader to power.

"My aim is to support the movement against the 'orange ones' - those America sends us to topple those in power and rock society," Kirill Domchenko, 25, a Moscow university student.

Putin in December accused the United States of encouraging opposition protests and said Western states are spending billions to influence Russian elections. He praised the 'anti-orange' demonstrators in remarks late on Friday, saying "I am grateful to them, I share their views," Interfax reported.

    Maintaining momentum
The main opposition protests were suspended over the long New Year holiday, when Russia comes to a halt. Opposition activists had been concerned that the protests might lose momentum after Putin, 59, ignored all their main demands.

The protesters want a rerun of the parliamentary election, the release of prisoners jailed for political reasons, reform of the political system, dismissal of the central election commission chief and registration of more political parties.

The Kremlin has promised to let more parties contest elections but has rejected its main demands. Ryzhkov told the crowd protests must continue until Putin gives in, and another protest is planned for one week before the election.

Crowds of a few hundred turned out to protest against Putin in other cities across Russia, although the number protesting is still only a small part of the more than 140 million population.

On a central street in the Pacific port city of Vladivostok, demonstrators carried banners reading "Putin - out!" and "The crook is making for the throne again ... send him to a prison bunk."

The protesters are angered by allegations of fraud in a December 4 parliamentary election that was won by Putin's ruling United Russia party, albeit with a reduced majority in the lower house.

The plan by Putin and Medvedev to swap jobs after the presidential election is viewed by opposition supporters as openly flouting democracy.

"We are not sheep or cattle. We deserve respect," said Marat Yafyasov, 54, a lawyer who travelled from Yaroslavl, 250 km (155 miles) northeast of Moscow, to join the protest.

"We are out in the cold because we can't let this moment go, we have to keep the protest going."

Skinny Fiber ? Key Benefits ? Article Directory

There is a new weight loss product called Skinny Fiber. It is sold as part of a network marketing. In this case, the people who join profit from those placed under them whether that person sponsors them or not. You can really benefit from the efforts of others. But let?s look further into this product and present some key benefits.

The product contains fiber. It is important to realize that fiber comes from plant matter and is something which is not normally digested by the body. In this case the fiber passes through the body without being digested by it.

This is very important because the fiber has been shown to have many health benefits associated with it. For example it has been found that the fiber in this product helps people to eliminate wastes from their body quickly and more completely. Fiber is necessary to encourage healthy bowel movements daily. Otherwise the waste matter can remain in the colon for several days.

This is a very unhealthy situation which can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. The Skinny Fiber product helps to improve this situation.

As the fiber in this product passes through the body, it helps to clean out the arteries and other blood vessels. This allows the blood to circulate through the body much more freely and with less risk of clotting or clogging.

Best of all the fiber plays a very important role in helping people to lose weight. Fiber absorbs water and when it does so, the fiber expands. So if fiber is ingested and remains in the stomach, once water is taken the fiber expands and helps us to feel full and very satisfied. The average user simply doesn?t eat as much food because they do not feel very hungry.

Keep in mind that to gain maximum weight loss benefit, it is vitally important to drink at least eight full glasses of water daily. However if this is followed and the product is taken as recommended, weight loss should certainly occur. This is in addition to the many health benefits which this product can provide.

There is much more information on this product and the network marketing opportunity associated with it. Check it out on the Internet. Not only will you be able to lose weight with this product but you can also make a nice full time or part time income with it.
